95 Z-28, dead battery - Recharged - Radio won't turn off! Please help ASAP!

Hey guys,

So my battery died (stupid me left domelight on somehow)... I charged the battery and it fired up this morning.

I get into work, and after turning off the car, I notice the radio will NOT turn off!

I just went back out to the car after an hour and its still on!! I physically have it turned off, so its just the clock that is being displayed, but it will NOT turn off.

I do not have retained power accessory's.

I have pulled all radio related fuses in the fuse panel inside the car... (are there any in the underhood box?)

Anyone have any idea what I can do? I unhooked the battery so I can at least drive it home later today when i'm done work, but this is very weird... i've searched and I can't really find anything...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks

Jeff

try pulling the fuse for the radio when you leave the car.

Sorry, forgot to mention, i pulled all fuses related to the radio from the panel on the inside, and there doesn't seem to be any underhood radio related ones

Thanks for the response though!

on the left side of the dash, there is a panel you can pop off... thats the main fuse block... has all sorts of fuses

for radio/accessorys/dimmer/lights/etc....

no luck on either of those related to radio sadly

If the fuse is pulled, and the radio is still "on", it would indicate the main radio radio circuit is getting power from the direct battery connection that powers the clock and retains the station presets and the security code. Either an internal short in the radio, or an external short in the wiring harness.

Thx Injuneer!

Do you think its possible that I either:

1) fried something in the radio by attempted boosting
2) managed to mess up the wiring harness when disconnecting/connecting the battery terminal cables?

3) All of the above

also, could you point me in a direction to test this stuff?

thx again!

is the radio hardwired? i wired head units and if the wires are touching each other like the red and yellow ignition and battery wires, it may cause that. I dont really know what color does what on top of my head but you may want to check if the radio is hardwired or not.

K, thx korrrray!

I have a friend that thinks he has his stock cd-player... i'm gonna try that tonight. If that works, then I know i've fried something in the casette player (not a huge deal at all - about time I upgraded anyways)

If not however, then i'm afraid i'm in for a world of hurt trying to track down a short in the wiring harness

ding ding ding!!

Dave for the win!

Finally had a chance to test with a friends cd-player and that solved the problem.

The radio will actually turn off now! hurray!

So 1 dead radio for me... time to go looking for a new one!

Thanks for all the responses guys!

sorry to bring this back, but i figured it was better to do this than start another thread and clutter the board. I am having a similar issue except that i have an aftermarket cd unit that was ired correctly and worked fine for a matter of years.

my issue is that one rainy day i noticed it was more than just my radio that would stay on after i removed the keys and exited the car. my wipers, which were set on intermitent(sp?) continued to operate as well. where do i look to solve this? I am replacing the cd player just in case(great excuse to upgrade )

thanks in advance!!

i just had a similar problem happen... right around the time i was having all my battery/alt problems...

my radio clock would NOT turn off... and it drained my battery several times before I noticed it...

I ended up getting another head unit from a friend, put it in, and that was it! Some how, something happened to the radio.

Once it was replaced, no more issue (with that!)

Also, it turns out, it wasn't my alt. that was dead...

The stud that the positive cable goes onto, was nuked... I think the cable was loose, and grounding out on the stud somehow... I put some washers on it and a new nut to ensure solid, non-loose connection, and the car has been fine!

i should of taken some pictures of the stud... it was freaky

Did you have the radio professionally installed?

I used to work as a audio install for Exclusive Co in Wi.

Ive seen that on some pre-obd2 cars where people hardwired the install and wired

1. The memory wire (Off the deck its yellow) to the IGN on the car (RED OFF RADIO) to the memory wire on the car, on some cheaper decks (AKA WAL-MART) some will backfeed through to the IGN wire on the car and for somereason keep all acc powered in the car untill the radio was shutoff manually.

2. If the car was hardwired the IGN and MEMORY (12+ Constant) are touching.

3. The Deck is shot and backfeeding.

MOST can be avioded by buying a $7 harness from wallyworld or best buy to adapt the stock wires to what you need and the color codes are there, they also make re-wiring type harness if the stock wired were cut and you would like to put them back in.
The Harnessess needed for 93-02 F-Bodies

NOTE TO BOSE CARS, YOU WILL NEED TO ATACH THE LITE BLUE W/ STRIPE TO THE P.CONT (Usually Same Color) FOR THE FACRORY AMP TO WORK,
on less expensive decks you will need to use the power ant wire, also some harnesses dont have the blue with white stripe depending on the brand in this case use the power ant on the facrory harness

Needed For All 93 - 02
Scosche MDAB - Micro Delco Ant Adapter

93-99 White Factory Harness
Scosche GM02B - Factory Harness Adapter
Scosche GM02RB - Factory Rewire Harness

00 - Up Blue Factory Harness
Note In these cars you need to listen if the door chime comes from the speaker in the car also changes if you have onstar

Door Chime From Speaker
Scosche DCGM09B - Door Chime Interface

Onstar & Door Chime
Scosche DCOSGM09B Onstar Interface

None OF THE ABOVE
Scosche GM09B - No Door Chime
NOTE THE GM09 WILL PLUG INTO GM CARS WITH ONSTAR AND DOOR CHIME BUT KEYLESS ENTERY WILL NOT WORK OR ONSTAR AND HAS BEEN KNOWN TO TURN ON MIL Lamp

Hope this helps, Maby others could use it also

Don
