94 Camaro cpe

I need to replace the ignition switch in my 94 , the dealer advised me that it needed to be re-programmed and would cost $450-500 to install. I don't buy this. the key has some sort of mag chip in it but can't see why it would need reprogramming. Any feedback appreciated.

Thanks!

LOL> Dealers are stupid.

You'll need to get a replacement lock cylinder and have the resistor pelet in the new key matched to your old key, that is all. It's not hard.

Replacing it will require a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compressor. Make sure you disconnect the -bat cable and remove the airbag fuse first.

remove the bag
remove the wheel
remove the airbag coil (be carefull not to rotate it)
remove the lock plate
remove the turn signal switch (let it hang by its wires)
remove the lock cylinder

The lock cylinder and igniton switch are two different things, so be sure what you actually need. If they were talking about the key, it's probably the key cylinder and the process for replacement has been outlined by TraceZ.

Well if you are in need of and ignition switch replacement...
manual trans-1990116 $29.25
auto trans -26036235 $50.65

and if it is a ignition cylinder
manual trans-26033387 $132.50
auto trans -26033390 $73.20

plus the cost of new ignition keys -$53.30each

labour should be as follows
-ignition switch is 1.5 hrs
-ignition cylinder is 1.9 hrs

all dollar values are in Canadian funds...hope this helps...
