94-96 cluster -> 93 problems SOLVED (for free)
94-96 cluster -> 93 problems SOLVED (for free)
Many have reported that when swapping a newer cluster into a 93 that there was a problem with the tach. I recently put a 95 cluster into my 93 and indeed, the tach acted very sluggish. After following the advice of several people on the boards, I removed the tach filter. At this point the tach read very erratic and was innaccurate as hell. From what I have read at this point everyone bought an ignition box to fix the problem.
Well I didn't want to pay for an ignition box, and fixed it for free. I disassembled both clusters, and put the circuit board from the 93 cluster into the 95 (I also put my factory odometer in so that the miles would be correct for the car). I reassembled the cluster and zeroed the needles, and behold, it worked flawlessly (note that I had to replace the tach filter, so if your doing this, don't remove it first, leave it). The tach, speedometer, oil, water, volts and fuel are all working normally, and now the car has the 94+ cluster, heater controls, headlight switch, etc.
Just trying to help out the next poor soul who tries this, because I was able to literally find NO information that would fix the problem. Everyone said remove the tach filter, but that didn't fix it (ask fastbird over at speeddensity.org about it).
And it was free since I already had both clusters.
Sorry for the lack of pics, I didn't have access to a camera today, if anyone needs specific info for the project, PM me or AIM me. I'll try to get some pics of the cluster, as well as the true duals that I haven't got pics of yet shortly.
