83 z28 engine surge

I Have an 83 Z28 when accelerating engine surges or bucks. It sounds like it is backfiring out the carb. Any ideas or sugestions would be apperciated.

How many miles? When was the last tuneup? Check plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fuel filter, vac. advance, etc. If the motor is very high mileage may be wise to check your timing chain.
