6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
anyone run the 1/4 have to shift to 5th, or have you done it? just curious how 5th gear would act in the 1/4 mile or in a street race that wont end.
flame me, im just curious.
thanks.

Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
ive heard of people on here recently talk about it, but the owners who had to do it had 4:56's installed...like they said it sucks cause its hard to shift into 5th gear pretty fast. thats what i heard
Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
yea, just try shifting to 5th fast (done it when i took mine up a wee bit over the speed limit
)
it's not the easiest thing to do
as long as you don't do 4.56s for gears, you won't have to shift to 5th in the 1/4 for the most part

Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?

4th gear does about 130 on my LS1....stock gears...
you really gotta be moving or short shifting to need fifth.
a street race that goes over 130 is just plain stupid unless it's on a closed track/road race.
Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
4.11 rear and I'm still in 4th through the traps.
I figure that by the time I get to a high enough trap speed (115 ish) to require a shift into 5th, I'll have already installed a cam and done valvetrain upgrades that will allow me to rev higher, and not have to shift into 5th.

Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
thanks for your posts. i am in need to see if 5th gear would pull in a race, or its too much of a drop in ratio(1:1 4th vs. .74 5th) to do any good. im gonna have 4.11 gears, and im afraid i wont be revving high enough to make it in 4th.

Yeah that's about right:
At redline I'm pulling (W/ stock gears)
1st=45mph
2nd=70
3rd=110
4th=?
5th=?! (!Keeping my eyes on the road!)
6th=?!?!
Don't want to start a new thread but what's the trick to launching with the M6?
I've heard 2100 RPM but, what happens with the clutch action?

Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
Back when I was running 4.10 gears, I had to shift into 5th before the end of the quarter mile. It will definitely hurt your times; you're not accelerating while you're shifting and the car won't pull as hard in 5th gear as it's an overdrive gear. I recommend changing your gearing; you could also go to a taller tire (28") at the track.
Re: 6spd owners, 5th gear racing?
thanks^^^
asking this for a friend. we are putting a small block stroker with nitrous and a 6 spd behind it.
its only gonna weigh 2700 pounds, that may help pull 5th a lil better.
a 4.10 is the only gear option available for an rx7, other than custom gears for 599.99 + shipping.
a 28" tire is a nono. there is barely room for a 26". dont wanna do any cutting just yet.
thanks again for the reply.
