6spd or auto?

Im getting ready to get a new camaro, more than likely i'll stick with the LT1 camaro's for price reasons. i want an LS1 because i love the way the sound and the new look but can't find any around my way that i can afford with good miles. but anyways my question is should i get a M6 or A4. I do plan on modding to around 400-450hp(Flywheel) but as far as seeing the track maybe nothing more than a few passes for fun n kicks. This is also going to be my daily driver. Around greensboro nc the A4 cars are easier to come by but if i have to i can wait a lil bit for a good M6 to come availible....some opinnions and suggestion please...T I A.

If you're going to see traffic with your DD, autos are sure nice to have.

Its a matter of preference, the consistency of an automatic is sure nice to have at the track, but a six speed will be alot more fun to drive on the streets. As you mentioned, it can be difficult to find an M6 car. I was in a similar boat, I wanted a black car with t-tops and a manual but I couldn't find one anywhere. Those that I did find were in pretty bad shape. I finally settled on an automatic tranny, but I did get my black car with t-tops.

Hi,
I would definately go for the M6,just be sure to delete the skip-shift feature as it will drive you insane. The pedal pressure on a stock clutch is fairly light so it won't be hard work to drive in traffic.Upgrading the shifter to something like a B&M would be a worthwhile upgrade as 2nd to 3rd shifts can sometimes be less than accurate.
Good luck in your search for a new car, hope you find a nice low mileage example soon, all the best,Mark.

Yep.. M6, unless you're seriously into your track times, is the way to go...

That said.. My clutch is pretty heavy... Doesn't bother me though.

I have a RAM HD Stage 2 Clutch with almost stock pedal pressure and love it. Also a daily driver and commuter car. Nothing is better than cruising to college going 85 mph at 2000 rpm with the 3:43 Torsen gears. L O V E the M6. They are also almost indestructable and can handle lots of HP.

Like said above sticks are more fun, everytime I drive an auto it is a disapointment JMO
I wouldn't worry about high mileage LS1's I have 113k and still put down over 300 RWHP on the original clutch.

I've always wanted a M6, but I got an auto cause I needed a car fast when I wrecked my last one. If you're all about the time in the quarter mile go with an auto, but a standard is well worth the wait. You'll regret not waiting if that's what you really want.

You like the LS1 sound better than the LT1?

Either way, sounds like M6 is what you want, for the same reasons as mentioned above.

thanks Im leaning toward an M6 now...i like the auto in my 95z but when i was racing an 00 GT i hit redline way too fast in top gear. i won by a car length maybe a lil more but at the cost of an overheated engine and boiled coolant, i think i need to stick some lower gears in it lol

Everyone I have ever known that has considered the M6 and gone without it, has had some sort of regret - including myself. My first Camaro was v6 auto....ever since then,
I knew that I should've waited... So 5 months later I got the v8 M6 (if I had v6 stick I'd prob still have that....but can't just go v6 auto --> v6 stick..)

M6 all the way....MUCH more fun to drive and I deal with a 120mi. daily round trip commute to work, some of which is ALWAYS stop-n-go traffic.
The T56 6sp is about as bullet-proof as one can get....the stock clutch however is not on LT1 cars. If you replace the clutch upgrade at least to a heavy-duty RAM or something similar. My T56 has 275,000 miles on it and it has NEVER needed to be opened up. I have went through 4 clutches, but ZERO internal trans parts.

IMO an automatic transmission doesn't belong in a sports car. Only 2 reasons I bought my Z... The 6 speed and the V8. I had no idea what the heck an LT1 was at the time but it took 1 test drive for me to figure out it was oh so nice

I have heard the LS1 in person as well as the LT1. I perfer the classic SBC sound over the LS1. Im guessing its the shape and position of the exhaust ports that make the LS1 sound different from the LT1.

I love my 6spd, and dont think I would ever buy an auto.....

That being said: If you put a high stall converter, a shift kit, and 3:73 gears in an A4 you can drop 7-8 tenths without doing anything else. Add your basic intake, headers, and catback your looking at a high 12 sec very streetable car!
