2nd Gen T/A Body Part Compatability?
I've got an 81 Trans Am that I'm in the process of resto-moding and I had a few questions. I was driving through Dallas the other day to my sisters place when I stopped to get gas off the highway. I pull up and get out and am pumping my gas when I hear a loud rumble behind me. I turn around to see the most BEAUTIFUL Trans Am that I have EVER laid eyes on! The elderly gentleman gets out we start talking. I found out that it's a factory original 455H.O. Black on Black 1976 Trans Am. I fell in love with the front end of the car, it seemed to capture the classic lines of the earlier 70s Firebirds, but still fit the required bumpers in without disturbing too much. I liked the look soooo much better than my 81. What I was wondering was if I could swap the front end of a 76 onto my 81? Is that possible, or do the body lines differ a little? I didn't see anything on his car that was any different than mine that would hinder the conversion. Also, will the taillights from a 74-78 swap out with my 81? They look a bit different, which is why I'm asking. I know most of you are wondering why not just sell or trade mine for a 76. Well, I like my 81 too much to get rid of it. It's got power windows/locks, T-Tops, 4 wheel disk brakes....just too many features to give up. Plus, the car I want is exactly a 76 (74-75 bumpers had the rubber laid in strips on top instead of a urethane encased bumper like the 76 had.) So I figure I could just make mine into what I want just as easy with the correct parts. Anyone?
