1994 Z28 that's a mystery
Hello everyone and thanks for the advice prior to this concerning my starter on my gorgeous 1994 Z28.
I now have a stranger situation because during the cold month of February, it started great. Now, when I turn the key.........absolutely nothing( again). All the electrical components are fine ( new battery) but the ignition isn't communicating to the starter. A few mechanics asked " does your key have a chip" . It does and they said it sounds like a security problem or the key is bad and it's a common problem with Z28's and vetts. I don't think it's the starter because I've heard the grinding and slipping sound that bad starters
make. Any suggestions? These cars cost a fortune to have a mechanic repair. thanx

If you are familiar with using a multimeter, you can troubleshoot this yourself. If not you can do these:
First, see if the Security instrument panel lamp is lit while cranking (after 5 seconds). If it is, the keyswitch resistor contacts are not touching the key. There are fixes and bypasses for that.
If no Security lamp is lit, you can try a few other things:
1. Repeatedly operate the keyswitch to start and run and back again. If the starter tries to operate, you may have a bad ignition switch contact.
2. If you have an automatic transmission, wiggle the gearshift lever a bit while the key is turned to Start. If you have manual transmission, repeatedly press the clutch pedal instead. If the engine cranks at any time while doing that, you may have a defective switch.
3. Swap the the Theft-deterent relay behind the dash at the extreme right end with the identical Hatch release relay nearby. If that works, replace the bad relay.
