16-17 gallons in 15.5 tank???
I've been noticing from time to time some gas pumps will say I've put in 16 to 17 gallons of gas.
Today I was able to put in 15.90 gallons when I was still was halfway between empty and 1/4 tank on the gauge. I could've have kept pumping but chose to stop.
Usually I can only put in about 14.25 to 14.40 gallons.
Anybody have this problem? I have a 1994 Camaro Z28.

agreed
15.5?? is the most I've been able to put in...
Gas station is doing something...
Not sure if this works, but worth a try...
make sure that if the price is say $3/gal that at 10 gallons into the tank that the total is $30

happens alot.. gas stations will mes wit the pump so it reads that it pumps more fuel than it actually does. and since it says it pumps more fuel they get more money. so the $3 a gallon put 10 gallons in is pointless really. because maybe you are only putting in 8 gallons. wit the pump saying 10.. thats how they do it. they just mess with the amount of gas pumped. I have run into it a bit myself, And then I like to call. Lots of times a week later they are selling is for 10 cents a gallon cheaper than everyone else as a penalty.. yet they actually make more money because every goes to buy gas from them lol. I think there is a fine associated with it too. just not sure how much it is.
I think the state agricultural commissioner would be the person to call with this matter. Their name is listed on every gas pump in the state. A quick google search of that name will yield some contact information. That gas station will pay some hefty fines if they are actually manipulating the pump readouts to make more money. Take 'em down brother!
Yup, I caught a Shell station near me that calculated gas per dollar wrong. Tust me, I don't pay for gas I didn't get. If you call your state people they will send someone out and test all their pumps, if something is wrong they get heafty fines.
Com'on, people, the reason is because even though your gauge "reads" 1/8 tank, YOU ARE OUT OF GAS. I have the same exact car and if my car is anywhere close to 1/4 tank, I'm looking for the closest gas station. The other day, the gauge read 3/8 and I got 11 gallons in it but that doesn't mean I have a 17 gallon tank, It means I only had 4 gallons, not 6 gallons. I've always had this issue and you just have to learn how much gas you actually do have.
94Z, apparently you missed the part where he said he put 15.9 gallons in his 15.5 gallon tank...and still had room left to go. We all know the tank dries up much faster at the bottom than at the top, but our tanks don't gain capacity.
Well duh they don't gain capacity. I'm sure if you let the pump stop on its own, it would stop in the vicinity of 15.5 gallons but you can get another dollar or two in there and that's where the so-called "gaining capacity" comes from. Seems like the older cars have that issue more than newer. My 94 Z does it, my boyfriend's 00 Jeep can do it but with my 03 Trailblazer and 06 Hummer you have to stop when the pump stops or it's going all over you.
gas pumps don't measure the exact amount of gas going thought there they just measure volume.. if you pump in the cold temperature the gas is more dense and you actually get more gas than the pump reads, on the other hand if you pump on a day when the temperature is really hot the gas is less dense and you actually get less gas than the pump reads.... but it really should me a small effect ( like 1% ) and if this is repelatley occurring at that same gas station something is up
"look babe"... Although I'm shooting myself in the foot w/ my answer, here goes...
I ran it OUT of gas, but was only able to put 15.?? in it (including the portable tank... some place on I95 near Florida...)

There is a little room in the filler neck for more gas, but, not that much.
My friend Dan and I once put 19 gallons (supposedly) into his 95 z28. Gas stations do manipulate those things. Plus, if you aren't completely out of gas, you may as well consider that room in the filler neck null and void, because there's most likely enough fuel left in the tank to fill the neck, it isn't that large. Sounds to me like you may be getting ripped.

The practice of manipulating pumps is much more wide spread than you think.
