Is 15k too much for a 2002 Z28 with 35,000 miles?

Hey guys. I am new here and I am looking to buy a 2002 z28. The car is close to mint, and only has 35,000 miles on it. Everything is stock and the owner seems like a down to earth honest guy who just doesn't have a use for the car.

His asking price is 15,000 obo. I looked online and the blue book value comes in lower (around 13,300ish). After asking around for a bit people said that generally these cars shoot for a higher price than kbb if it's in really nice shape.

Now I am getting closer to buying, and I just want to know what kind of offer I should give the guy. I don't wanna lowball him, I just want to find the most reasonable price for both of us. Nothing's wrong with the car. It needs to be inspected and needs new tires. He said he can get it inspected and put new tires on it and then I will make an offer.

Suggestions? Thanks.

I looked at the same car with the same miles at a car lot for $10,000. They would not budge $1 so i passed.

Your location is going to make a big difference in how much to offer. $15k does seem too high, though. For comparison, I bought my '02 Z28 with 22k miles on it for $16k in November of '05.

Thanks for the replies. I really do want this car, but like you said it seems a little high. In a 100 mile radius all the 6-speed Z28s go for a price around that area, but still. I am just not too sure on how firm he is on the price. I was going to tell him that after the tires and inspection was done with I could give him 14 but no higher. Think that's still too high?

So what sounds more reasonable do you think, 13.5? 13?

Offer him $13,500 and tell him you are offering a little lower than his asking price b.c it needs new tires. Also most times that people are selling things to private parties they are expecting to negotiate some. He probably did his homework and knows that KBB says $13,500 so that is why he is asking a little more, so that when a buyer tries to negotiate down he will end up right at what its worth. Either way, you are only talking about 1500 bux if he wont come down and its the car you want just buy it and move on..

Good luck with the purchase...

And another thing, I would really go for the lower price over HIM putting new tires on. If you let him put the new tires on he will probably get some cheap crappy tires that only cost $300, and he ends up profiting another $1200. Other wise, you should buy the car for $13,500 and send $700-$800 and get some good tires. (BFG)

Thanks so much for the reply. I would love to get my own tires only thing is that it needs to get inspected, and it most likely won't pass with those tires. Maybe I can request the tires I want and up the price to 14k? I am not really familiar with what tires I should get. I obviously want quality. Nothing outrageous though, just a good set of all terrain tires.

Thanks again!

Does the car have 16 or 17 inch wheels?

I am assuming 17's but tires for the 16's are a little less expensive....

I have had both of these types and would recommend either. (I currently have the tires in the first link.)

Thanks a lot for the links. I am going to bookmark them and probably order if I get this car. And yea, they're 17".

So if I ask about putting on these tires a little over 14 sounds good to me, no? I just think over 14,500 seems too high even with those tires.

Those are 16" wheels. When I got new wheels & tires, I sold the wheels with tires mounted (brand new) for $250?

You're going to get varied responses on this. it all comes down to what a lower mileage Z28 is worth to you.

I looks nice, I think those wheels are 16". The guy said "OBO" so he is expecting lower offers. Have you seen the car in person yet?

Personally I would buy it "as is" and get the tires myself. (cause I would pick up a set of 17's first and buy the new tires for those.) You can probably find a good set of 17's in the "for sale" section of this board or on ebay. SS wheels or ZR1's would look nice on there.
