ignition module
ignition module
hy guys have an issue with my 1994 camaro z with an a4. the problem is a check engine light is on the code that i get is code 42 ignition module ground circuit. now i think it is inerminet because the light comes and goes more so on and i also have a starting problem it takes like two key cycles to start sometimes. now i have acsess to alldata at work and i pulled up the pinpoint test on the code found the the test told me to test the 4 cavities on the connector but the wire colors didnt match up to the wire colors on the car and i also think that this could be the problem is that i have a 1993 ignition module on it but plugs in fine i just saw the part # are different so if anyone could help me that would be grea

I've compared the 93 to the 94, and the only differences I could find between the two are:
The wire colors are different, as you noted. But they still show the ABCD in the same order on the connectors.
The pins on the ECM/PCM are different. This makes sense, since the 94 also controls the transmission.
The part numbers for both the ignition module and the coil are different.
The tests for each appear to be the same if you ignore the wire colors and the ECM/PCM differences. ABCD all appear in the same order, and the tests are mostly the same. It takes a bit more to test the PCM than it does the ECM, which again makes sense to me. If it were me, I would run the 94 test sequence.
Is it possible that if you have a 93 ICM that you also need a 93 coil? IDK on that one, nor do I know why they changed the parts.

just for reference. A DTC 42 can only occur when cranking and it will kill the injectors to prevent engine flooding. Could be why you have hard starting. The problem must be intermittent or you would not start or run OK . When cranking battery voltage is at it's lowest (10V or lower) coupled with the incorrect ICM could be why the 42 is code is setting. Has the problem been around since you got the car ?
