Driving in stop and go traffic this morning. Car suddenly dies and cranks fine, but doesnt restart. It did restart once, but only briefly, and during that time it was backfiring like crazy.

The following were changed within last year or two: plugs, wire, coil, fuel pump, battery.

Im not sure how old the opti is. I bought the car with 178km's on it and it has 189k now. When I changed the plug wires, they were originals, so maybe it was on the same opti all this time???

Does this sound like a dead opti? If so, is it a good idea to change the water pump at the same time?

Before blaming the opti, I would attach a fuel pressure gauge and see if the fuel system is working properly. Just because you changed the fuel pump within the last 2 years I wouldn't rule it out as a possible issue. You could also have something faulty in the ignition system. ICMs are known to cut out when over heated.

Thanks for the advice. I have a fuel pressure gauge already from my nitrous system and its reading at 46ish psi. ICM could be an issue too, althougth I have done the cooling spacer mod. How does one test out the ICM??
