1996 lt1 starter problem

My factory starter went out on my 1996 lt1. I bought a remanufatured starter from advanced auto parts and had to add approx. 1/4" of shims to the starter and it still would not catch the flywheel every time I try to start the car. I returned it and got one from autozone and still the same problem. Any suggestions???

Re: 1996 lt1 starter problem

I had to go to a Summit Hi_Torque mini starter. It had no clearance with the ring gear. (Adendum to dedendum clearance @ zero). Added about 0.060" of shim for ring clearance of 0.040 inches.

I run a Spec Alum flywheel. I don't think the ring gear is very round.
