why TWIN turbo over single?
why TWIN turbo over single?
hey guys, this is just a question that popped into my head the other day.
are there any other advatages of having a twin turbo set up other than producing more boost pressure?
i guess what im saying is that if you have a single turbo thats capable of producing say 20psi and you use a wastegate that keeps you at 12psi cause thats all your motor can handle then what would be the purpose of having a second turbo besides that fact that its cool as hell????
thanks fellas

Re: why TWIN turbo over single?
You have the whole concept of twin turbo's incorrect. You can run just as much boost with a TT and you can with a single.
Both turbo's work just as hard as each other on a twin setup. Twin's usually build boost quicker than a single since they are smaller, but run out of steam on the top end.
Boost pressure is just a number. It's all about how much air flow get's into the motor. 20psi with stock heads can be 10psi with ported, well flowing heads.

With twin turbos it puts the turbos closer to the heat. More heat is more energy to drive the turbines.
Twin turbos don't all ways run out on the top end, it all depends on how the set up is done.
I am building a TT set up for my V6 and it will run out of power near the top, by design. I want it to be for autox or drifing type stuff. All I need is the car to model it to, wich is back home.

Boost is a meaningless number.
You have to look at the compressor map to choose a turbo that will meet your goals.
Generally, 2 turbos capable of flowing 60lbs/min each will be more responsive than 1 turbo capable of flowing 120lbs/min.
That, and packaging. I went with twins because I could fit them in the car and keep all of the accessories, meet my goals, and have room to upgrade in the future. (I could run twin T76's with no changes to the system).
I would not be able to fit a mid/large frame turbo in my car and keep all the accessories.

I did mine in twins because some people told me "you'll never get those turbos to fit in that engine bay.

What turbos are you using?
Re: why TWIN turbo over single?
They're about the same size as Harlan's...a tad bigger though. I've been looking @ prices on 76s though.
They look like they fit just fine to me...plenty of room to expand too.

Looks nice.
I've got the same size (physically) turbos mounted down low.
Twin 76's may be a bit overkill.
Did I just say that? Nevermind. I meant twin 76's would be good for a 7 second car.

I subscribe to the theory: "if one is good, two must be better." That and someone told me I couldn't run a faster mph than him in the 1/4.

Plus they look cool as hell.
