Who has ran a 4L60E and a turbo?
Who has ran a 4L60E and a turbo?
I've started my turbo build up. I will be using RealQuick's kit and probably a T-76 with a FMIC. I have been browsing for a while now here in the FI forum and have noticed that everyone seems to run the t56 tranny! I would think a build automatic, high stalled, behind a turbocharged engine would minimize any turbolag if it exists. I see advantages to the t56, which I have had in the past--gas mileage being one of those advantages for a daily driver. Have any of you tried an automatic tranny with a turbo? If so, is there any significant pitfalls?
Thanks, I imagined that would be the big point of the automatic. I just wonder how it drives on the street--I would imagine controlling traction would be easier with a manual than an auto.
I was browsing over at turbomustangs.com and they seem to say when going turbo, automatic is the ONLY way to go...and you know those mustang guys love their 5speeds so needless to say, I was surprised!
Also, I wouldn't know what gear to run. I think a 3.73 would be too much lack of traction on the street. I would probably want 3.23 or 3.42 at the most. I'll most likely be finding a 12bolt or 9" before long.

The problem with a 4l60e is that they just plain cannot handle a lot of power. Even after being built, they still seem to be a farily week tranny. T-56's can handle tons of power, and that is why so many people use them. 4l60e's seem to not like anything over 500 RWHP, and a have seen many stock t-56's handle 750 RWHP without a problem
Regarding the right tranny for a turbo, a stalled auto will likely get you better track times. But a 6-speed is more fun to drive and fool around with. So it is all a matter of preference...

I have a few guys in my car club here in Vegas running rear mounts, TH400's and 3.00 gears going deep into the 10's. Stock blocks, OEM cams. Is this a strip car only or a commuter car? Obviously a three speed isnt going to be the best choice if you drive 25 miles on the free way every day.
i swaped from a 5 speed to auto and i'll never go back......
the 4L60E can handle any thing you throw at it, IF the right company builds it, even a trans break
plus with turbos you can run lower gears and still keep your milage........ i set my cruse at 100 and get 28 mpg on the highway

expensive, they can be, but not much more so than a well built 60e. of course, you have to factor in the new x-member, and shorter drive shaft as well. if you get the right tc, not a factory 65lbs tc, they are not that much heavier than the 60e.
80e is the way to go for automatics, if you ask me, especially now that you can get a trans brake for them too. also, the smaller difference between 1st and 2nd can help keep it in the power band.
just my opinion, of course.

Well, I love going to the strip on the weekends, and it is not my only car. However, I would like to keep the drivability where I can drive the thing on weekend road trips/cruises--so I really need an overdrive.
So, where can I find an 80e, and does it need to be built or is it just that tough stock? Also, how much should I look to pay for one and what is involved in making it work?
I really appreciate all the help.
