whats the biggest cam that can pass smog
just wonderig what some of you guys are passing with, so I can figure out a good combo to go with, I figure at a smog check, you can always take off the blower belt , but a cam you cannot do the same so if its to big, your out a luck. What is the factor that determines how well it passes, is it the overlap and duration?
Well, the largest cams to passion emission here in Cali are the CC305 and Hotcam. Programming is necessary for both of them to better your chances to pass. The item of the cam that will determine passing is the overlap. There are a wealth of info in the LT1 Tech area of the board that would help you. This topic may get moved over there.
I am strickly talking about blower cams, I would think that they would pass easier since they have better LSA and overlap. I was just searching the old posts, and found a thread where a guy passed with a 383 and 224/236 in California, he said with flying colors, it didn't say what LSA it was on, but thats a pretty big cam to pass in that state, there was no mention what kind of programming was used, but it looks as though there is some way. Anyone else?
I passed easily with the HOT cam and stock programming even though it is not smog legal. The only thing I changed with LT1 edit was the injector constant to compensate for the 42 pound injectors. I think the twin flp converters helped a lot. One converter is not enough for this motor, it tends to disintegrate a single converter after awhile. I had been running the flp setup for around 6 months and just took a converter off a few weeks ago to check it out - it looked perfecto. Crane has a few cams that are 50 state legal too. You don't need a big cam with a supercharger, that is for sure.
A 383 will clean up a cam more too. Jeff Stevens passed with a larger than 305 cam, but he doesn't know exact specs as Blackstone keeps that stuff secret. But, Jeff knows his programming, and he had to work the car with a special smog tune to get it to pass.
