What oil to use with s-trim
What oil to use with s-trim
I don't have the s-trim bolted all together on the car yet- but i'm changing the oil while i'm installing it. i have been using 5w30 havoline synthetic. is this grade okay to use with my supercharger?
FWIW, I remember reading in my instructions for the S-Trim to use a 20W50 oil. I use Mobil 1 15W50 and have had no problems. IMO using to light of an oil spraying gears inside a supercharger housing that can be spinning upwards of ~55-60,000 RPM's is not good enough.

There was a mention in the install about 20/50 oil, but I think that was just to carry out the junk that may have gotten in the pan when drilling the oil return hole.
Any way, like I said, I've been using synthetic 5-30 for the last 3 years. No problems. And my supercharger sees a lot of that 55,000 rpm impeller speed ...

Actually, when I called Vortech, they actually suggested using 5-30 or 10-30. Further when I had rebuilt my supercharger and went to purchase the bearings, I found that the thinner the oil the faster the bearing can spin. So for overspinning sake and for the bearing, the thinner the oil the better it is. This is by a bearing expert. According to the bearing spec, the bearing that Vortech chose for us is rated at ~60K rpm in oil and about ~45Krpm in grease. And the oil they use to rate the bearing is the thinnest oil they can get.
I didn't realized this until a week ago. I had tried using 5-30 up to 20-50 in the last four years. And now I am using 10-30, also because that's what my engine builder suggested for my motor. I used 20-50 for almost two years, but I was not overspinning it. Now that I am overspinning the S-trim, I will be using the thinner oil.
On the other hand, the oil you use is more importantly chosen for your motor. If you motor is clearance for a certain oil, I would use that over what the supercharger require. If you are able to use thinner oil, I would use it. In all honesty, I don't really think the oil makes that great of a difference on the supercharger. The most important is never to run dry of oil then your bearing will collapse.
