What oil do you guys use in your Self-Contained superchargers?

I know that companies like ATI tell you to only use their oil ...

But, internally, I dont see anything drastically different from say a D1 and a D1SC? So why cant you just use the oil you use in your engine? I mean, if its ok for a D1, why isnt it for a D1SC?

I'm sure it'd be fine with another oil, but the trick would be to find out what viscosity it is? Is it 0w30? 5w20? 5w30? 10w30? 10w40? 20w50?

I don't think its a problem, but you know this is probably up to the experts... call ATI and ask them.

Hmm ... So no one uses anything other than their oil huh?

I dont see how it could harm them. The D1, and the D1SC, are pretty similar aside from one needing oil lines plumbed to it ( Being lubricated by engine oil, 5W30 maybe 10W30 ) and the other is self contained, using ProChargers oil.

The self contained ones, the oil is to be changed at regular engine oil change intervals anyways, and I was just wondering if their oil is another money maker or is someone has run motor oil in it. Or gear lube?

I know, that's exactly what I was talking about. When I said "another oil", I was referring to any engine oil other than ATI's. As I said before, the big question is what viscosity is the ATI oil? If you find that out, I'm sure you can run the Castrol/Valvoline/Penzoil/Mobil 1/Royal Purple/Redline oil that is the same weight...

>I don't run a Procharger, so do they (Procharger) recommend using any weight engine oil with their non-self contained units? Vortech doesn't specify, so I run 10W30. I was entertaining the idea of running an oil cooler from the oil pan to the head unit when I upgrade to the YSi-trim from my T-trim.
Do you think the external fuel pump (T-Rex) would work on oil?

Hmm ... Guess I will have to see if I can find the viscosity out of it ...

Havent seen a T-Rex pump in person, but I would imagine, pumping oil, would put a HUGE stress on it. Itd be well lubricated though lol.

In all seriousness, I dont know if it would work or not. And what it would cost you for that, you could always use the old-style sandwich adapter that goes on where the oil filter screws in. Then run two lines, a feed and return line, to a front mount oil cooler, like I have. I been using M1 5W30 with adequate oil pressure. Around 20-25PSI on a hot idle ( Like sitting in traffic ) Cruising, I am around the 40+ PSI range.

The oil that ATI sells is very thin. It is thinner than any engine oil. Its about the viscosity of sewing machine oil.

Im not against using it, but if you can use regular engine oil, it would have been a little simpler.

I just figured since the D1's were lubed from motor oil, a D1SC could be as well ... But owell, looks like I am ordering some of their oil this winter lol

Good one. No, I'm definitely not using sewing machine oil. I don't plan on experimenting with oil for my $2600 head unit.

Re: What oil do you guys use in your Self-Contained superchargers?

ATI's oil was developed and sourced for the particular requirements of their self contained blowers. If motor oil, transmission fluid or sewing machine oil met the specific requirements needed to lubricate the blower they would have used it. The "oil slinger" inside a SC blower mists the oil and lubricates the bearings and seals. The direct oil fed blowers use a mister nozzle to essentially do the same thing but run at an increased operating temperature compared to a self-contained unit.

ATI sells 3 6oz bottles of oil for $29. The recommened oil change interval is every 6000 miles. I don't think that is taking advantage of somebody with an oil change costing $10 or less. It certainly isn't a profit center and 3 bottles are supplied with a new system.

True the oil is hard to find in the field, though there are dealers that have the forsight to stock it.

Tests have been run with quality motor oil and operating temperatures increased an average of 30 degrees over the ATI oil.
