weighing out nitrous or turbo

I am going to be doing a pretty basic rebuild since my stock engine is hitting 165000 miles. I have another engine to work with first though. doing forged pistons with my ported heads and CC502 cam. question is, what else should be done if I plan to run a rear mount turbo on low boost OR run a 150 shot nitous later? also, which of the 2 options is most worth it? I chose those 2 as they are pretty different for what people run in my area. not lookin for crazy numbers, just would like to dip into low 12's. any ideas?

The cam and head upgrade you are talking about should get you there. A turbo would be a good choice (but I don't know what the specs of the 502 cam are).
Nitrous is like carrying a gun. Some times people know you have it, some times they don't, but in all cases it is the last thing any one wants to see you with. You also only get a few shots before you need to reload.

You could just get a cam and head package. That would give you the performance you want, and would be more reliable over the life of the project. I did a cam & heads and nitrous and ended up going mid 10's on a bad clutch. But it did go high 11's N/A, here is the vid.

Re: weighing out nitrous or turbo

I would definatly go with forced induction over nitrous. The nitrous is either all or nothing, it's only good for drag racing. I even prefer a supercharger over a turbo even though a turbo will make a little more power, mainly because you have more control over when and how much boost you're making. I hated the fact that the nitrous was empty so quick after every refill. I hated having an empty nitrous bottle, and running a 150 shot you may get 6 or 7 good 1/4 mile passes out of a bottle. At about 5.00 dollars per lb thats over 7.00 per quarter mile pass, It doesn't take long before the price of nitrous refills pass what you would have spent on a forced induction setup. That being said, I may throw a 75 or 100 shot back on the car at the track to compliment the boost .

I've had nitrous cars and and 2 turbo cars and if money wasnt an issue I would go turbo without a doubt. I loved nitrous but you never have to refill a turbo. Drag racing on the turbo, however, was certainly a bit more complicated than just hitting the button.

cam specs are 218/224 526/536 on a 112lsa. I am doing home ported heads so they might not be spectacular. I have done a few sets of heads and they came out pretty decent. the turbo just sounds like such a badass idea!! I am in california so I do have to deal with smog, but I heard that the STS turbo system is actually legal since it doesnt mess with the smog stuff, although it is not CARB approved.

If that's the case then I think you are on the right track for the turbo system. I am not a cam expert, but I think the cam you are looking at should have a lsa of 114-116 not 112. I am sure the one you have will work (the car will run), but it might not be the optimal set up for a turbo car. We have option of getting collector plates in OH so we are exempt from emmisions testing in counties where it is required. Good luck with your project.
