which used turbo to get?
Okay so ive decided to make my own rear mount set up. first question is what turbo can i find used fairly cheap. ive heard of some LT1 guys using holset turbos off turbo diesel engines. i realize this would not be the ideal setup but if was going to go that route which truck model should i look for that would have the closet sized a/r to that i would need with a rear mount setup for my 350 to run like 5-7psi until i eventually get a forged engine. second question is that ive heard when you rear mount the turbo the long piping to the intake acts as an intercooler (sort of). would this be enough cooling of the intake mixture to prevent knocking or would i also need an intercooler. i realize when your building a turbo system you probably shouldnt go that route if money is tighter but i really think i can pull this off withought going over $1100. no labor and i get discounts on tubing and other parts. thanks for any help
Re: which used turbo to get?
to be honest, the masterpower T70 seams like a pretty good choice with the smaller P-trim wheel and the standard .68 oncenter single inlet exhaust housing. yet it still has a ~70mm inducer to move a good amount of air. I would imagine this turbo would work well in a rear mount setup! and would not limit you immediately if you wanted to call upon it for higher pressure levels! just my two cents.. and you can find them for just a shade over $500 new with a one year warranty. that is a route i would have considered had i decided to go rear mount!
