Turbo, what do you think?

alright well ive been thinking about this a whole lot lately, and ive been wondering exactly what one would need to put together a turbo set up. im thinking a single turbo though less effecient would probably be what id try to do because of cost concerns of needing to buy only one turbo, and the complete lack of room for turbos on the exhaust manifolds in our engine bay. so exactly what do all turbo kits include? i mean manifolds, fuel pump, turbo, ignition upgrades, good tune? i know a guy here who fabbed up his own manifolds so im thinking maybe i could something like that with my exhaust somewhere around where the y-pipe meets. anyone heard of this or thought it would work. i really have no clue, if this would even work, and im curious what kind of boost you might be able to run because i know stock pistons suck and LT1's have high compression to start with. anyhelp would be great im just trying to piece together ideas right now and see if itd even be worth it. o yeah are there anykind of generic turbos that might work for my application, or a certain model that people have used more than others and had success. thanks again im just trying to get a feel for what it would take other than a whole lot of work. looking for a summer project.

not sure about most the other stuff since I'm new to the LT1 world...but twin turbos is more of a show thing to say "I got twin turbos" or whatever...a single turbo is more efficient and should be plenty for an LT1...why do you think the supra guys convert to a single turbo when getting up into the big hp numbers....

Re: Turbo, what do you think?

It's all about flow and boost response. In the turbo buick community, the generally accepted path to follow is to stick with a single turbo until you loose the balance of "flow vs response" and horsepower. A few of the stage-block guys will stick with a single turbo until about 800rwhp ( keep in mind this is with <4.5L V6s). In a 350 V8 i can see well over 1000rwhp with a single and still have good spool quality. There is a point where a twin setup will show benefits over a single (mainly in spool time). While it's just a gut feeling of mine based on my experience in turbos, i can see a 350-383 SBC working quite well with a pair of T62-T70 turbos making well over 1300hp. T76s are rated to 7-800hp each, while the GTS series are rated to over 1000hp each. IMO, for a "streetable" V8 i'd stick with a single until you plan to make over 900rwhp. Then twins might be better for an engine that desires quick boost response and still maintain those levels of power and lower rpms (<7000rpm).

Just my $.02

agree there for sure.

as far as generic turbo's go some people run the masterpower turbo's and they are happy with them.
myself i'll spring for a nice precision or turbonetics turbo. i may just go with that t76gts. people mount the singles where your intake tube used to run, run the outlet down to an intercooler and back up the passanger side into the tb.

stick with a single unless your shooting for like 1200+hp.

imo

But twins are so damn sexy. I know that's why I'm building a setup for my truck. That and the 1000+ rwhp thing.

I'm more in the business of getting the most bang for my buck, if one turbo can do it with good spool time then i'm all for it rather than buying two of them expensive ****ers.

Depends on your point of view. Forced Inductions lists a PT76GTS for $1385, my PT-61s are only $670/ea ($1340 total, and I'm not buying them from Jose, I get them for $620/ea $1240 total). The only real cost difference is the extra wastegate I have to buy, though if you consider I can use 38's and the larger single will probably require a larger gate to control it at low boost, you're not really saving any money.

Re: Turbo, what do you think?

We're thinking along the same lines.... if one turbo can make XXX amount of power with good response and costs less than a twin, it's better to go that route. Put the money you save into other things like tires or suspension. But in your case you got a better deal with the twins, so all is well.
