Turbo or Supercharger

I had a quick question. I was wondering if you guys thought a supercharger or turbocharger would be better to put on the ls1. I was wondering what would give you the most power. I know they both will hurt your engine over time, but which one hurts it more. Thanks

Re: Turbo or Supercharger

When the proper head unit it chosen they will both supply great power. If guess it comes down to your budget for that project. When improperly tuned they both will have tragic results.

Re: Turbo or Supercharger

Most HP on the stock bottom end of an LS1 between a blower or turbo? If you plan on running much of any boost (more than 6#'s even intercooled) plan to be replacing that stock bottom end of that LS1 anyways because it just won't take it, and if it does it will not last for long.

Now, if you plan to go forged internals (ex. crank, pistons ect.) then either one will potentially get you more HP than you will know what to do with. Both have setups out there able to get you well over 1000 HP to the wheels if you are willing to spend the $ for the correct setups to support it. The turbo's are generally more expensive than the blowers.

It's really going to depend on what you want and more importantly how much you are willing to spend. Figure a blower motor setup + the blower will cost you a WAG of $12,000. If you would rather have a turbo instead, add another $7,000 to that $12,000 and you should be in the ball park.

If your car is setup correctly with the correct parts, it will last. If you plan on going cheap with mild boost, its a matter of time before you will be looking for a new motor. Lightly boosted, you may be able to last for a bit longer, but then whats really the point as you will spend a ton of $, and not really gain much HP.

A turbo is far easier on a motor then a supercharger. There is not additional load on the motor when not under high throttle. Either can make more power then tou will ever need.

Re: Turbo or Supercharger

people have ran boost on LS1's with stock bottom ends and have had good success with things holding up. ~500 rwhp is where ls1's start to see ring land failure, but its kind of a toss up. The most important things to consider when going FI: An intercooler is a MUST, make sure you have a fuel system to support the boost, keep boost to no more than 8 psi, and make sure you get a DYNO tune...improper tuning can result in detonation, so get the car to a reputable shop and do it right the first time. Turbos will typically make more power at any given boost level than a supercharger, but the cost of running one is more $. Thats the reason i chose a supercharger. Good luck!
