Turbo Newb ?'s

Ok, first off im not asking about building one as of now. I know i don't have the cash, knowledge, and experience to do it. I was just wanting to get some basic info on them and such. A few decades from now i hope to have one but as of now they are just dreams.

I have heard that for a boosted motor lower CI would be better then a higher CI engine, why would that be? It just seems like basic knowledge a turbo 383 would make more power and put down better times then lets say a turbo'ed 355. Can anyone explain this?

What would be better, TT or single? I see a bunch of Supra guys going to single turbos and putting down more power then their TT counter parts. Why is that? I know that with a single you cut down on engine bay heat which is a huge factor.

What makes a 'turbo cam'? Larger intake duration, or larger exhaust? I'm a retard when it comes to cams so if that sounds stupid that is why.

Anyone have any sites that i can research and at least get some basic knowledge?

Thanks, and please don't flame me, im just trying to learn as much as I can. Being as im only 18 i have plenty of time to learn and ya'll were once in my position so take it easy on me.

Re: Turbo Newb ?'s

I will try to answer these to the best of my ability I am about to make a TT 383 LT1 the enigne is done and im putting together the turbo setup now and it will all be custom fab

You want a lower compression ratio because you are adding air If you have a 12:1 ratio after boost it will be a 15:1 or higher ratio because of the added air and detonation (knock) is alot more likly to happen. You would also have to run some really high octane to help prevent knock 107 and up. Now if you start with a Low comp motor say 9.1:2 or 9.8:1 after boost you are around 13:1 roughly and that is ideal for power easier to tune and can be run with pump gas with some booster. A 383 can put down more power than a 355 for the fact it is a larger motor it two engine set up exactly the same and one was a 383 and one was a 355 the 383 might .... might put down just a bit more but the Tq wil be much higher with the 383 and the 355 will rev faster and higher but thats a whole nother box of peanuts to get into now.

Twin Vs Single Its alot more preferance and some performance On a V8 we can do a Large twin like drag cars ect for the street a smaller twin setup is good and will last longer because you arent pushing the turbos to the max to get the max. supras skyline ect go to a huge single because its big and can put alot of boost and they can still spool it up when they want to get 20 to 35 psi and went with a twin setup the turbos would be to big and they would never be able to spool both of them to the max efficiency so they go with a single and if you ever notice the lag that they have is pretty big because they are having so much trouble just putting out enough exhaust to spool that up. V8s lots of displacement single or twin we can push it. inline 6 like in a supra is a smaller engine and cant spin twin T88 turbos but it can spin a single t100

a turbo cam is a cam that has a high lobe separation and the intake and exhaust lift are the same but not huge, remember you are forcing the air in
a good turbo cam is a 224/224 with a 114 lsa a good Na cam is a 236/244 at a 112 lsa with NA you want your valves open as long as you can keep them open to suck as much air in as possible and to let as much exhaust out some times those two over lap a little like with my example cam. by keeping the exhaust lift and intake the same and separating them each valve will be closed there for you will not blow the boost right through the cylinder which could happen with a NA cam.
That cam i gave and example is pretty extreme a stock cam is fine for a low boost engine like a off the shelve ati, vortech or STS kit that put a safe level of boost that works optimal with the stock setup of the engine.

I hope this all helps out some I have been doing alot of research for the past few years and this is what I gather anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong or add anything i missed
