Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Hey guys...need some help with my personal stuff. I have a 95 that I am begining to put a turbo on. I was planning on having my fabricator make everything up, but I have been around a few of the PTK race kits, and like their quality, I am curious if their street kit will fit my bill.
Heres what is important to me. (in the order of importance)
1. This is NOT a race car. This is a driver. It will see 600 mile trips on occasion. I do not want heat related issues, or major fitment issues. I would prefer to use the factory cooling system.
2. I do not want to cut the car up. I want a straight forward, bolt in kit.
3. Would like to make in the neighborhood of 1000 - 1200hp, if need be.
4. I would prefer good ground clearance.
5. Would a Y2k housing fit in the placement of their flange as delivered?
I would like to here from the people that are using the product, not the people that are making it...if you get my drift. If any of the previous concerns, will become an issue. I would prefer to fab my own...but also like the ease of purchasing off of the shelf.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
I don't know a whole lot about this stuff so don't take my word for more than its worth.
That said, I just noticed in your post that you may want 1000-1200 hp, with a factory cooling system. I could be wrong but I don't really believe its the easiest thing to do. Of course, I've also heard alot of bad things from people who have messed with the factory setup, so maybe I wouldn't advise that either.

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
The PTK kit is one of your best bets yes ive heard that messing with the stock cooling system can mess stuff up however ive seen a few setups where it works rather nice and have yet to see physcial evidewnce of the claim so id say its really up to you
Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
I have PTK kit for my 94 Formula, the 76GTS air-to-water intercooled kit rated at 1150hp with all the uprgrades for the kit. I've done alot of research and spoke to every turbo guru i could find and with that being said in order to make 1000-1200 effectively it requires alot of expensive and detailed modification. I know from experience. It also pretty much requires the application to become an ALL RACE setup, traction would be a joke with stock sized street tires if you get my drift. I would highly recommend upgrading the cooling system and the engine and drivetrain would have to be bullet proof. I know that a guy with the ptk 76GTS kit made 978rwhp and destroyed his race built t56 in 3 passes! Im not saying that a streetable 1000hp monster isnt possible but its unrealistic. You should contact Jose at www.forcedinductions.com he has alot of insight into LT1 turbo applications and he will be able to lead you in the right direction.
good luck

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Not quite finished. I will post results soon, but I was speaking from the experience of buying all of the corresponding parts to build a 1000+hp Turbo LT1, its very expensive and I would be hard pressed to say that my car will be streetable whatsoever. I will contact you Mike when I get my car dyno tuned and let you know what kind of power she makes.
Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Thanks for the replies.
I understand everyone's concerns, but this vehicle will never, ever see the track. This is just a cruiser. Occasional highway blasts aside.
Is their anyone around that has this kit, installed, and running, that does not work for PTK?

Also, It will be ltx powered. I will more than likely use a set of 15 degree x heads I have laying around, but I can get the exhaust port pretty dang close to where factory is.

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
I like the PTK kit and it has been proven to make alot of power. I didn't go that route because you replace the stock fans with pushers and I've never had luck with aftermarket cooling fans.
I ran my home-built kit much like the TTi kit, though I use a 3" log and 3" downpipe (TTi is ridiculous 2.5" pieces). Mine leaves the stock cooling fans in the stock location as well as the radiator, air filter concealed, all pipes over the k-member, retains cruise control, etc. . . plug access is even good. I can change my plugs in 30 minutes. I can even pull the turbo by itself and replace header gaskets without having to disassemble any other parts of the setup. Plus, I've gone 143 mph in the quarter at full weight.

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Thanks for the reply Mike. I am sure that I want to keep the stock cooling system, including the fans! Factory AC is also a must! Would you be interested is fabing up some pieces?
Thanks

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Hmmm. . . York, PA, huh? I'm not really willing to pull my turbo kit all the way back apart to fab up another. . . unless the price was really right. I'd do it on your car, but that's quite a drive.

Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
Dennis, have you taken a ride in a 600+rwhp turbo car? I have been in a few. Its tough to keep the dr's planted when the gas pedal goes down. There is a local LS1 that makes 820rwhp and can spin his 315dr's from a 3rd gear roll. Highway blasts in 4th and 5th gear wil be the only time you hook 1000hp. If this isnt a track car then I would make it more mild 600-700rwhp, unless this will be a dynoqueen used for PR stuff.
Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
I have a Gen 2 PTK kit on my 96 SS. It is not quite finished but I am shooting for 1,000RWHP. I am using Advanced Inductions fully ported heads and intake, a T-76GTS, air to water intercooler(good to 1,200hp) and a ton of other stuff. All of the things these guys have been saying is true. This has to basically become a car you RARELY if ever drive on the street. Now if you shoot a little lower on the HP scale you should be more than fine on the street. I have spent close to 14,000 and Im not even finished. That doesnt include my suspension, trans, etc. PTK makes the best kit you can buy. And NO I dont work for them. Also, Jose at forced inductions knows his S**T! Call him for any questions with your setup. Very nice guy. Good luck and let us know what you decide!
Re: Turbo kit, fab or buy?
I am familiar with driving higher HP stuff on the street. My concern is why you say this cannot be driven on a regular basis. Is it a durability concern pertaining to the kit? It is very important to me to have the factory cooling system in place, as well as AC. It sounds like this will be a problem (atleast the cooling fan part) with the PTK kit?
Mike,
LA is not that far of a drive. I am very interested. Do you have any pics of your setup?
