Turbo kit designs ... making a custom kit?

Well, I just got a turbo from a barter deal with a customer. I installed his FMIC and switched the T60 to a T76 and I got the old (but still good) turbo. So, as my plan has always been, I'm gonna make a custom front mounted kit for mine.
Well, one problem is that I just installed long tube headers and custom y-pipe like 3 months ago and obviously have to get rid of them and lose a bit of cash. Anyways, I've got an old set of L98 shorty headers in the back room that I can use for the flanges (and possibly the pass. side manifold) but my question is about the manifold design. Is there a lot to lose with a log style manifold (obviously easier to make) or are the gains not worth all the extra effort in making a proper manifold? Ofcourse, the log style manifold will save a lot of space and probably take less time to fab up, but I'd like to hear your views.

Thanks

with logs you will still see the same max power if the rest of your motor is going to complement the design, (mainly your cam) a log will however hurt spool time, but with a single 60mm turbo you wont have to worry about spool anyway

Re: Turbo kit designs ... making a custom kit?

One more question. What's the optimal tubing size? I was thinking, since it' a matter of exhaust velocity (before the turbo), there isn't need for tubing much larger than 2.5" (is that too big) ... ofcourse, after the turbo, I'm planning on a 3" piping to get all the air out of there!
My plan is to probably have a shorty header on the pass. side and bring it under the oilpan to the driver side and connect to a log (2.5-2.75"?) manifold that leads to the turbo, and then a 3" pipe to take it away. How does that sound?
I'm still under shock that I have to sell my LT's and y-pipe after only 3-4 months but other than that, all's good!

That's exactly how TurboTechnology does their kit. Someday I'll dig out my old TTI kit and sell it.

Why don't you dig it out right now? It'd save me a bunch of money on car insurance! lol ... really, you interested? I've got the turbo, just need the hot/cold parts at a decent price.

yes a 2.5 inch should be sufficient for your 60mm unit

Well, my budget is low so it would be appreciated if you are really generous with the price . I'm just pissed off right now 'cos I'd have to sell te headers/y-pipe/electric cutout/ect. and all I'm getting is a bunch of lowball offeres by people who say they can get my same setup new for half the price I paid when new! If the price is right, I'll take it and just hold on to my setup until I get a decent price for them.

I'll PM you when I dig it out of my garage. I understand the whole budget thing. It'll definitely be going for alot less than I paid.

Re: Turbo kit designs ... making a custom kit?

Your setup sounds like mine. I'm using an SLP shorty on the passenger side. I ran a 2.5" crossover pipe to a 3" log on the driver's side, to the turbo. The turbo is in the same location as centrifugal superchargers, but with the compressor facing forward. It's a T-76 GTS. I have a 3" downpipe, connecting to a 3.5" when it gets just under the car. The wastegate is where the stock cat was and it connects the crossover pipe to the rest of the exhaust.

Be warned, it was ALOT of work fabbing this thing up. But, with 680 rwhp SO FAR through a loose converter and auto, I'm happy. Now that I've more than doubled the intercooler size, switched from a 52 to a 58 mm tb, raised the intake runners, switched to a turbo cam, and found a 1/2" diameter boost leak, I'm expecting way over 700 rwhp.

Cool, any pics? I know for sure my 104K mile LT1 is gonna blow up if I add anything more than a handfull of PSI.

don't know, you talking about the Turbo Technologies inc. kit?
A customer told me today that had I let him know earlier, he would've given me a 68mm that he just gave away after sitting in his garage for years! But for my application, I like the thought of a quick spooling T60 'cos I'm not going for huge numbers anyways ... or atleast that's what I'm saying right now!
