Turbo Help

Hey guys and gals,

I just bought an S10 today and I'm going to be putting my 350 TPI/700r4 tranny from my GTA into the truck. Anyhow, since the truck has no inner fenders and there's a ton of room under that hood, I was thinking of using some shorty headers and a pair of small turbos to add a little more fun to the mix. So... my question is what size turbos should I run? The motor is a stock bore 350 with a 10/10 crank, PM rods, and I'm going to invest in a set of forged pistons which should drop the compression to ~8.5:1 with the 64 cc heads on the motor. I'll be running the hot cam that's in the motor as well as a ported TPI setup which I may eventually switch out to a stealth ram setup or something. I don't think I'll need more than 8-10 psi. Sizes and a place to get the turbos "cheaply" would be much appreciated.

Thanks all.

for what your looking for boost wise ya might want to check out the turbomustang.com forum.. they are having a group purchasen on the Masterpower turbos.. I have personally had 2 of them now, the T70 and now the GT45 and both look of excellent quality and craftsmanship.. the revised bearing sections in them allow you to spin the wheels and they spin and slow down as if they were BB turbos.. very smooth slow without and drag! a pair of the smaller 60-1's or even a smaller size then that would easily get you 8-10 PSI efficiently on that motor.. and these won't break the bank!

Those still seem a little big for a twin setup on a small block 350 for my goals. I'm thinking something like a pair of 40 series turbos would work pretty well and they should produce boost really quickly. I did e-mail Joe about a GT45 for my turbo LT1 project though. So the quality on yours is pretty good?

Oh, and thanks for tipping me off to the GP.

Just remember the MP GT45 is not the same as the Garrett GT45. I explained this fully in turbomustang. Some folks are being mis-led on the power output of that turbo. I have 3 of them in front of me.....yes they are large in physical size, but also remember they are not on a T4 flange either, it does not take much to get it to work though, the bolt holes may need to be clearenced about .3"'s out.

Thanks for the info Jose, I'm going to stick with just turbo charging the TA, the truck is getting the TPI engine and a 100 shot of gas to play with. Should be more than enough to scare the pants off people.

BTW, there's pics of my ghettofied truck in my photo album in the sig.

Jose, what's the deal with the divided housing? Why do you have to split up the headers?

96Turbo, due to the non-divided header you will have the exhaust gases hitting the divided housing right at the split. This will cause a very high heat spot at the edge of the divider, plus you will cause turbulence just before the exhaust gases hit the turbine. Not only that you will also have a high pressure spot right before the exhaust hits the turbine wheel which is not something you want.

I'd say you should go with maybe some mitsu turbos. Maybe a pair of 16Gs and then in the future if those werent big enough, you could switch to sleeper 16Gs, which use the same housings, and have close to 800hp flywheel potential if I remember correctly. turbos like those are cheap and readily available.

The only problem with 16G's is the housing are T3 flanges.
