Turbo headers almost finished **PICS**

Here's a pic of the headers so far. They are made from 321 stainless and tig welded. Still need to weld on the V-band flanges, fab up the crossover pipe and the turbo flange. Should be done in about a week.

DRIVER SIDE

PASSENGER SIDE

Waddaya' think?

Nice welds man! Your engine bay is certainly going to be crammed when that's done!

Wow looks like some rather large tubing, 1 7/8? Where is that drivers side turbo going to sit? Looks nice!

Thanks guys! It's been a long time coming!

Bill,
The headers are 1.75" primaries. For some reason the camera makes a shadow of them that makes them look bigger. The crossover pipe and turbo flange leave alot to the imagination but the GT80 fits nicely right about where the air pump used to sit.

96TurboTA,
No, the fab work was done on the original LT1 still in the car. Those heads are the ones going in with the turbo.

A word of caution, the stock heads will have a different approch then some afr heads. Not sure about the 190's but I know the 220's and probably the 210's will. When I tried to bolt up some of the turbo tech kit on my car the cross over would not fit because the height/angle on the head was different then stock.

Other then that wish I had a tig... Ill probably sell my kit in the future and do it over will a tig next time

Hmmmm... Didn't think of that, i'll measure all the critical dimensions on the AFR's and compare them to the stockers.

Thanks for the warning!

Are you using a flex joint in your crossover? It would help in the final outcome. I sold my first turbo kit to my friend. I had AFR heads and the crossover wouldnt fit with his Brodix heads so he had to have a new section welded into it. We thought it was probably deck thickness.

Point is, its best to mock them up on the heads you are going to use, OR use a flex coupling so there is at least a little move in it.

Otherwise, LOOKS GOOD! What collectors are you using?

OK, you guys have me worried now. I wasn't planning on using a flex joint, didn't think i'd need one. I'll take measurements as soon as I get back up to Tally, i'm out of town right now. I guess worst case scenario, I add a flex joint. How much are those?

The collectors, along with everything else, came from www.spdexhaust.com .

Pro Turbo Kits sells the flex joints. I had to wait a couple of weeks because they are slammed with business and had to order some more of them. Its a pretty nice piece though.

One thing though, once you get a couple of heat cycles in the headers, they will conform pretty good to your flanges. The last kit I built, I tacked up th headers with the flanges flat and when I finish welded them, they had moved a little to where they were not exactly flat but after the first heat cycle they pull up good.

It made taking apart my first kit pretty nice after that first start up.

You can get mild steel flex joints from JCWhitney

I second that! With my old turbo kit I switched from stock heads to AFR 190's, and it seems that the exhaust faces on the AFR heads are a little narrower (closer together), so some modification had to be done to the crossover to get it to fit. It wasn't bad though, just make sure you do the crossover with the new heads or do the flex. I wouldn't do mild steel though, get stainless!
