turbo build up

I am planning on building a turbo 383 for my car. I have a 96 TA... Is the STS turbo kit good? So far I am building a forged 383 with a cc306 cam, comp r lifters, Comp cam promagium 1.6 RR, I plan on getting lt4 Ported heads matching intake, 58 MM TB...I want to make somewhere in the hood of 800 HP. I dont really plan on boosting that much maybe 5-6 PSI...would the STS kit be good for this or is there something else out there that is better? I know I will prob need a different cam and bigger injectors. But can someone here please point me in the right direction of what I need to do?

thanks
matt

for that kind of hp, you'll need a pretty well sized turbo and I don't know if you will even have enough ground clearance if mounted back there.

Now that I think about it I know I am not going to get 800 or even close to it. What will I do with the STS turbo kit bolted on to the above list? Is there anything else I am forgetting to do with the motor?

thanks

i'm doing the exact same buildup that you are. i've got a 96 WS6 trans am with a 383 being freshened up. i'm taking mine to Jordon also. i initially looked into the STS kit and they were willing to make me a hell of a deal as long as i promissed to do some testing and send them results. the more i looked into it and talked to the guys on here, i decided that the STS kit wasn't the right application for my car. if you're wanting a turbo, and you want the kind of numbers most people are when they put a turbo on then you should probably seek another setup. i'm in no way putting down the STS kit because like i said, i almost bought it. just think of what your goals are and budget yourself a lot of extra money. you have no idea how expensive it's gonna get. trust me on this one. Johnny

oh yeah, do it right the first time. don't buy a kit that you're not sure about just to be disappointed when you get finished. this was what made me change my mind. hope this helps

EngineerMike made a good point in another thread. Because of the backpressure in the STS, you're going to need a cam with little to no overlap. The CC306 has 70+ degrees of overlap... not good for the turbo set up. With pressure in the 25-30 psi on the exhaust and 5-8 psi on the intake, the exhaust would more likely pour into the combustion chamber than intake.

In short, you'll need a cam with very little to no overlap. Mike suggested 10* ATDC... I would need to run a few tests to validate that but in principle it makes sense.
