True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
I was hoping to build a 383 9:1 compression with a specific turbo cam and then add the turbo later. I hear that running the car without the turbo it will run bad or very unresponsive. Is that true?
Re: True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
I know a couple of people driving around with turbo motors with no turbos..... the cam in a turbo is fairly mild in nature, when it comes to LSA, and the only other factor would be comp. ratio. I dont see the motor being optomized, but I dont see it running especially bad around town
Re: True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
One of the guys at Cam Motion thought it would run like do-do. They gave me these specs for my build up.
Duration (intake/exaust) 231/226
Lift (intake/exaust) 564/556
Lobe Center Separation 115
Intake Centerline 113

Re: True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
I built a supercharger motor once and ran it for a while with no blower. It was an 8.4/1 compression 355, but it ran 11.96 at 114 all motor on poo gas.
I'm not quite sure why people insist on using and obeying Cam Motion's recommendations. You really ought to see their shop. They have no R&D equipment at all. No spin-master. No dyno. Their cam-doctor is on a temperary fold-up table. Sure, some Pro-Stock guys use them, but the Pro-Stockers design their own cams and just get Cam Motion to manufacture it. They really aren't nearly as advanced as Comp or even Crane.

Terry at Cam Motion told me they grind one off cams for the companies you mentioned.. Cam Motion is also in the winners circle after most races, that's why I went with them.

Who else do you recommend for a custom grind?
Re: True or false about a engine built for a Turbo
Terry also told me that 224 at .050" with .378" lobe lift is impossible (Comp lobe #3192).
They grind one-off cams for local engine shops also. The local shop will typically send them a grind they know works, but is damaged, and Cam Motion will copy it.

To get a great custom grind, you have to go to an engine builder who is an expert in his field. Thunder Racing has had dozens, if not hundreds of different LS1 cams on the dyno. For a NA LS1 cam, go to Thunder. Duttweiller has had hundreds of turbo cams on the dyno. For a turbo cam, go to Duttweiller. It will cost extra, but you're paying for their R&D/dyno time.
And speaking of Thunder, they are located about 15 miles from Cam Motion. Who grinds Thunder's cams? Not Cam Motion.
