Is a Switched Supercharger Possible?

Would it be possible to have a supercharger that operates on a switch?
What if a person were to rig some sort of clutch assembly onto the pulley of the SC that is operated electronically off of a switch on the dash?
You could have stock power when you wanted it and then flick a switch for some added ummph when needed.
It would be like unlimited nitrous.

I suppose most of us would have it "on" all the time anyhow.

Uh, if you have forged internals the engine will last just as long, if not longer, than a regular non-boosted engine.

You'd have to have some kind of clutch-engagement like how the AC works. As you turn that switch on, the timing/fuel would have to be altered to take into account the blower. This added compression would have to be taken into account as well. All in all it's a bad idea.

The computer if properly programmed could alter timing/fuel. I think its a neat idea. I’m sure it could be done and possible advantage could b found, I'm sure. Good thinking Pandamonkey.

just like the "valet switch" some cars have, that cut power and won't let you exceed 2500 RPM or so

Ive never heard of that. If I ever get a nice enough car, and actually had money to go out thats something Id look into!

What if you had something like vtec, where the blower pulley expands/contracts? that would be sweet, though the belt tension would be the problem

yeah, its actually a valet key, so when that key is in the ignition, it won't go past a certain amount of throttle percent, speed, or rpm. The only two i know of off the top of my head are a ZR1, and my moms old acura TL. I'm sure many companies have it though

If the impeller isn't spinning and compressing the air, how is air getting by?
