Supercharger minimals to get running
Supercharger minimals to get running
I'm looking to boost my car soon. I'm trying to buy a kit that is mostly complete for my needs. I have tunercats/tts datamaster for tuning. Going to buy a walboro 255LPH to replace my stock fuel pump. Motor is all stock, and I'm at 5200ft elevation.
I'm assuming I will need the blower/bracket/tensioner/crank and blower pulley/belt/plumbing/oil fittings and lines. For fuel/timing I'm hoping TC will work just fine???
My budget is around $1600-$1800, am I in the ballpark of a basic vortech or procharger system?
Thanks.

You need to address fuel somehow, not just tuning. You need an FMU or bigger injectors and maybe some way to boost fuel pressure if you get an FMU. You should get a fuel gauge as well and probably a boost gauge too so you know what's going on. Boost is a hard thing to do cheaply. I mean you can do it cheaply, but then it will get expensive later, one way or the other.
Read up on the tricks people have been doing with the stock computer and boost. The 2 bar map seems popular. I think being able to control timing/fuel while in boost is very important. Most cars turn into timing locked carbs while in boost.

500rw is going to be tough on the stock shortblock, even at your Ele.
Along with your fuel pump your going to need injectors, at least 36lb. A good safe dyno tune. Also your budget is a little small, your really going to have to look for a s trim or procharger. A powerdyne is more in your budget. But intercooling it will be an interesting project.

Ya, that's 500whp CORRECTED. At this altitude thats like 400-410 which I know the stock bottom end will hold up. The corrected CR up here is like 9:1, so a little boost shouldn't hurt.
As far as blowers- p600b, P1SC, V1, V2 are what I'm looking for. Powerdyne is garbage that I wouldn't waste cash on.

.....Famous last words..... The bottom end will hold, but your pistons are the problem. Any hint of detonation could cause issues. This has all been debated here. I ran that way for a while, but eventually, it caught up with me. Some detonation, but it actually eventually led to a spun bearing. Point is, plan on failure at some point, but go foward cause its fun. Make sure its good and safe from a timing and fuel perspective. Meth injection and or intercooling will help. As far as tuning, you can take MAF tuning pretty far on your lower boost levels. Start searching ebay. You should be able to find good deals there as well.

I would run a D1SC pulley down so when you blow it up you can grow. 42# injectors should be good with a walbro. I would run meth to keep the octane up if you are running pump gas.
racetronics upgraded wiring would be a nice touch as well
I ran a p600 at 8-9 psi for almost 4 years and 30K with a BTM and 42# injecotrs. never one issue. the motor is now in a 67 camaro.
I was carefull when i ran the car hard, and only ran good gas (100octane)

This car doesn't need more than 500whp. I only want it to do consistant 12.0s at the drags. Too many rules once you hit 11.99 and faster... I'll get a liter bike if I get teh urge to go faster. A D1SC is overkill.
As far as detonation goes... keeping the car cool, and a conservative tune should keep it reliable.

I'm running an s-trim with methanol injection. Stock bottom end, heads have never been off, with a 230 236 cam making 488rwhp corrected pushing around 7.5 pounds. Uncorrected on a cold day it made just over 520rwhp. With a slipping clutch I ran 11.4 @ 124mph on ET Streets with a crappy mid 1.7 60ft. On drag radials it ran consistent bottom 12's with 1.9-2.1 60's. I know its close to the edge as far as the stock bottom end/head gaskets go but it held together for over a year now. Fuel wise i'm running a 255 walbro with 42lbs injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator(with the alkycontrol kit too). Dyno tuned by Jeff Creech at carolina auto masters. BTW, i bought the kit used off this board for $1600 with a mondo BOV. You should be able to make 500rwhp all day with ported heads and low boost, just make sure you run methanol to prevent detonation, or else.........boom
BTW, i'm not running a fmu. 6200rpm pill with a pig rich tune and conservative timing for methanol injection

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. So without the FMU, I'll do the 42# injectors when I get the heads/cam. Isn't the FMU the same thing as the Fuel pressure regulator?? I thought the vortech FMU would increase fuel pressure as boost rises? Now where in tunercats can I decrease timing for over 100kpa? Do I need the MSD 6AL?To add fuel, I'm assuming I just need to change the %change AF target values to around 11.5.

I have a budget of 1600-1800 for the blower setup. Already have $200 on the side for a universal FMIC w/ BOV kit on ebay. Already made clearance for the FMIC. Debating $200 on SJM abs delete w/ line lock for more clearance. AIS already gone. Already have full exhaust and 1.6RR NSA on the car. Rear driveline is built up. Will need RAM clutch, MT ET streets, spare motor (hopefully this summer).
Next year I'll hopefully have another $2k for LE1/blower cam(210/223)/timing set/lifters/gaskets/fluids. Looking for the SC now because I can build the system up and still drive the car around everyday, belt removed.

You budget is too little. you will need 5-7K to do it right ... With you doing all the labor easy.
