STS Turbo on LT4 Conversion w/ Hotcam ??

would it be safe to put an sts turbo kit on my 97 z28 with the lt4 head and intake package??? I know the lt4 kit bumps up the compression ratio a bit. If so what kinda boost would be safe ??? Im not thinking alot ......

if it's the stock bottom end (which i think it is?) not much. Do a search (if you haven't), i'm not sure exactly what to tell you, but for the long run, no amount of boost is really "safe" on a stock bottom end.

2 bolt mains and a high compression ratio are the enemy.

You would want to add a cooler (FMIC or Meth), and with a good tune around 5-7psi. It can be done just have to see how the car reacts to it during the tuning.

I don't know why everyone seems to think 2 bolt main caps are so bad. They're more than enough for most builds that get run on the street, especially if you use a good set of studs.

The real problem is high compression with cast pistons.

if you're going to replace the studs, why wouldn't you go with 4 bolt splayed caps which would be much less suceptible to crank walk

Cost would be the first thought here. Billet caps, studs, machine work to install them, then having them bored and honed.

Also, if the caps aren't installed correctly, you can majorly screw up the block.

Next month I should have dyno numbers on my 94 camaro lt1 engine with hot cam /bolt ons and sts turbo kit- threw stock heads. Should easily break over 400rwhp. I will post it when I have the dyno numbers

Do you have any track times with just bolt ons and the Hotcam? Be sure to get some before and after track numbers with the turbo.

Re: STS Turbo on LT4 Conversion w/ Hotcam ??

My track numbers would be horrible since I'm still using the stock 10 bolt. I really would like to run it at the track. I would like to trailer my car out there instead of driving it,racing it and driving it all the way back. I really only built my car for street performance - something to cruise the streets with. I will have dyno numbers for sure with all my mods. Like I said it shold easily put me over 400rwhp at 5psi

Re: STS Turbo on LT4 Conversion w/ Hotcam ??

I live in utah, in the same city that STS was created, rick is a buddy of mine I've spent alot of time tallkin to him, and alot of my friends have had the STS's on there car... I can tell you now it will blow your motor sooner or later, But the thing I would be worried about is expecting the 4L60E tranny to hold up. A Few of the guys that got the turbos were soon after doing the th350/400 swap's cause the 4L60E's blew with in weeks of gettin the turbo. If you get the turbo all I can say is dont get greedy with the power it gives you, thats where most people screw up and turn the boost up another 2psi.

I would be in the same situation.
So is this a safe combo? or just a bad idea with the increased compression?

Re: STS Turbo on LT4 Conversion w/ Hotcam ??

I'm only running 5psi on my stock engine and 7psi for those light to light street races against the cobras and vettes. It's just that I would rather have fun with the turbo and then do a rebuild instead of rebuilding and waiting till next summer or so for the turbo. I know I'm doing this stuff backwards but in the mean time I will have a ton of fun with the kit. I drive it almost twice a week so I should be safe for a while.
