With the right size/matched turbo, you can run the same about of boost no matter where the turbo is located..either rear or up front in the motor compartment. The limit on how much boost you can run is going to come down to fueling amount/quality, engine compression, and the ability to cool the charged air.
Tiny turbos will spool very quickly but will reach their peak at lower psi..sure you can make them produce alot higher psi but they will be out of their efficiency range and the charge will be extremely hot, which is bad...remember air heats up as it is compressed.
The bigger turbos resolve the heat problem, but take longer to spoolup and their best efficiency range will be at higher psi.
The lag in spoolup can be accomodated for by a looser convertor if its an automatic car, but there is a point then that it becomes not very street friendly to drive.

Seems like a good insurance company would releive you of this problem...Of course you probably have to inform them of what it is like stereo equipment.

Re: STS turbo

I have personal experience on buddy's car ,its an lt1 and I was going to buy one for my ls1 but decided not to at the last minute.

First his car..basic kit..60-1 turbo I believe..no meth injection. He bought a fancy greedy boost controller and screwed up. He hit 12 psi and his stock engine went bye bye....He rebuilt and put in a blower piston forged and think dropped about a point on his compression.

He then started running it on minimum boost..around 5 psi. Car ran not bad but they seem to have lied when STS said you can run stock fuel pump and injectors. Not in his car. Buddy who did programming on his car set his rev limiter for now to 5000 as the injectors are 100% about there. He has scanmaster lt1 in his car and got a lot of knock before we limited his rpm.
He needs bigger injectors..think 42 would be a good start and better fuel pump, recommending a racetronix pump and harness to him. Then he should be able to get 5 psi to redline or maybe 7 psi or so. He has no intercooler yet and no meth injection.

Other things..well the ground clearance sucks.do not install sts on lowered car!
It looks neat back there though not really worried about someone stealing it,not very likely. It sounds awesome spooling up and when you are in the car or behind it. It has very minimal lag think hit full boost by 3500 or so. I does not spin them currently off the line much at all with his 3.23 likey do to some lag but he could fix that with a stall converter.
We raced against my 96z three times..Twice from dead stops and once from a roll.
He won all three although I did get the jump off the line due to my tires and traction mods. He easily ran me down even at 5psi and blew by me like I was standing still. I like the sts!!
My current mods at time of race and his car was 100% bone stock except for sts and msd ignition BTM version. Anyway my mods were 2800 vig ,3.42 gears, magnaflow catback, G2 induction, holley filter, tb bypass, maf translator, 30 pound svos, asp underdrive balancer, hpp for gears only and fans,160 stat.I would have needed my not yet installed zex at 75 hp to keep up and think 100 to 125 to beat him even at 5 psi or maybe he was getting 5.5 not much more than that.

My main reasons for not buying an sts for my ls1 99 trans am. You have to give up my kenny brown subrame connector on drivers side. I have to sell off my b and b catback and the sts are too expensive new. 4000 or so. Too much .You still need to buy injectors, tune, fuel pump, boost timing retard system. And if standard a blow off valve and you likely will need the meth injection or intercooler to run 7 or so and forged internals for much more psi and then likely tranny or clutch and rear end.

But don't let anyone tell you they don't work. The sts work fine and they will destroy a near stock lt1 ,haven't tried my ls1 against him yet. Sooner or later.
If you can find an sts for cheap used grab it up. You will love it. Its a big hit at car shows too..some people lied on the ground to check it out..

Re: STS turbo

The one thing I will agree with in all of these STS discussions is that nobody should expect to buy the kit, and nothing else. Not gonna happen. Either by necessity, or by addiction to the boost...you'll want to up the boost. Which means more $$$. Been there, doing it now.

Re: STS turbo

I have to agree with NYSSGUY
I had the kit on for almost a year and now found out that number 7 & 2 has low compression. I kind of new that this would be coming because I installed the STS kit at 80,000 miles. The car still runs real good except the SES light keeps coming on due to slight engine miss fires. I cant tell, but I had the car checked out when the SES light kept coming on. I was waiting for this. Now I have an excuse to do the new engine project in which today I found out that my new engine is complete (fully forged 383 with 8.7:1). I ordered a new GT-67 turbo from STS and expect to have at least 500rwhp (I hope). The engine builder says that the engine is good for 800hp at the crank.
