sts intake idea
To fix the intake concerns of the sts system, I was thinking to myself why not run the pre-turbo intake tube back into the engine bay? There is probably a good reason why its stupid, but I'm just throwing ideas out there. I guess Im thinking of this because its the only thing keeping me from taking the sts plunge, no matter how much they prove the intake will be safe down there, it just bothers me. It would probably complicate the system alot more, but if theres no big disadvantages to doing it, why not? Im thinking it might cause alot of restriction to the engine when not under boost, but Im not sure. Any opinions?

It would probably be easier to cut a hole in the fender and mount it upwards like the Firebird featured in GMHTP.

I figured this idea would kill the throttle response and efficiency, and I guess I was right. Basically, Im debating between a mild (4.5-5#) boost sts or blower setup for the lt1. Ive liked the fact that the sts sits there, boosts when you need it, is cheap, has a huge 'cool factor' and isnt parasitic. What I dont like is how easy it is to steal, and what I definately dont like is the intake mounted out back, I live on the wet coast and we get our share of rain.
I was also thinking powerdyne. I know alot of people rag on it because it is a baby blower and isnt capable of making huge boost numbers, but its probably for the better, because if I had the potential of a ati or vortech Id probably step it up and blow my engine
I like the simplicity of the powerdyne, and how it is self contained. With any supercharger, I like how the intake remains in the stock position and how they are hidden. To the average onlooker, it looks like a cai. Also, with the quiet powerdyne, they wont know what hit them until its too late.
I simply want to create enough power to crush those damn wrx's and keep up with the 03-04 cobras, so I dont need to shell out for a high boost system, plus the only upgrades I'd like to do on the car is injectors, fuel pump and a good tune. I want a conservative setup so I dont blow the stock pistons and leave myself without a car. Remember, this is all for a daily driver/fun street car, this keeps me away from heads and cam combos because I want to keep streetable and keep decent mileage. Some days ill lean more towards the turbo, and other days ill lean towards the supercharger. Any ideas for helping me make up my mind for good? I apologize for the long post, but its been on my mind alot lately.

5.0THIS is right. Any centrifugal equipment suffers greatly from restrictions upstream. Compressors operate at Pressure Ratio's. So if you're running at 2/1 pressure ratio, then -1 psi at the inlet is -2 psi boost. Back when I had my Vortech, removing all of the hard inlet piping (2 ft of 3.5" mandrel bent), it picked up 2 psi boost. Can you imagine having 12 ft. of 2.5" or 3" piping to draw through? The STS has enough problems with the base design due to the location - no need to compound them.
Stick with a 6 psi Vortech or ATI.
Another option for you would be a mild heads/cam combo. Some ported stock heads, quality ported intake, and the Crane baby cam (210/224) can get you 370 rwhp, which will match a 6 psi non-intercooled Vortech. That's good enough to break into the 11's if everything's right. It will be a much simpler overall set up, easier to work on, more reliable, and will still idle smooth and get good gas mileage.

Its a good idea Mike, but does it pass emissions? What I like about the supercharger is the fact that its a bolt on. The ***** here are pretty damn strict with their inspections, so with the supercharger i could remove it for testing, plug in the stock tune, and pass the test, then reinstall it after. Also, I like the fact that the power is there when you need to get on it, but the car drives stock otherwise, kind of like nitrous without the bottle.

So ported stock heads and intake with the Crane baby cam will get me to 370 rwhp without blowing emissions or killing gas mileage and still idling smooth? Thats a huge amount of power with virtually no effects. Are you serious about this, because that would be pretty cool.
The only thing that sucks about it is Id probably have to get someone to install it for me, whereas a FI system I could do myself. Im not sure what people charge for this kind of installation.
