STS block tapping....

Ok, my buddy is all ready to install his STS kit, but he said he needs to get the block tapped for an oil feed for the kit. Anyone know of any good places in the philly area that does this? And, where do they normally tap on LS1's?

Thanks.

i dont even know, its not my car, its a friends, and he swore to me you had to 'tap the block'. I thought that was a little crazy, oil pan would be enough, but he said you needed pressure to get the oil to the turbo. I figured the scavange pump would do it, but thats only for the return.

So i dunno....

i just looked into it, and you have to tap a plate right above the oil filter mount? supposedly that pressureized and brings prefiltered oil to the turbo.

I dunno, ive never been under an LS1 before.

"...taps into the engine's pressurised oil system. (above the oil filter)"

Chevy High Performance, Febuary 2005, 'Riders on The Storm'

That's all the info I can get. What if you used one of those oil cooler plates that screws onto the threads for the oil filter? Just block off one of the passages....

I'm going to wait till they perfect the system before I get one...

Why don't you just call STS and ask them. Or someone that sells the STS system?

Re: STS block tapping....

Oh my god... is it really that hard? There's a plate above the oil filter. It's held on by 2 10mm bolts. It's not used for anything in f-bodies but Corvettes have an oil temp sensor there, and that is also where an oil cooler goes. Pull the cover off, get a 1/8th npt tap, drill the thing out a little first, and then tap the threads in. Cover the brass fitting in teflon tape, and voila! No real machining done, and if you **** it up, its only an $8 dealer item!

Haha sorry dude, I figured most LS1 owners would know exactly what was being talked about, didn't realize it was a friends car. Didn't mean to come off as an ***. Any other questions you have let me know, I'll do my best to help.

Re: STS block tapping....

Its cool. No big deal. We just brought the car to the garage tonight and put it up in the air, opened the STS box and laid everything out. Should be fairly straightforward it looks like, with some engine wiring to be done. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for the offer, if i have any questions, ill post em here.

Re: STS block tapping....

Isnt there a tapped hole that is plugged on the block above the oil filter? Take the plug out and put the fitting for the oil line in there.
