stockish sized turbo cam

I saw combination motorsports smallest turbo cam is a 218/218 which isnt large but I want to keep it under 6000 rpm. Any suggestions on where to find some like that other than the obvious custom grinds?

Not in an off-the-shelf grind. The stock cam works fairly well in mild turbo apps. Why not keep it?

Well I figure its not intended for a turbo so it may not work nearly as well as a cam of similar size that is, guess it will work ok if there isnt anything out there... what rpm would the 218 usually take a motor to like 6000-6200 rpm?

Re: stockish sized turbo cam

I am running the stock LT1 cam for now in my twin turbo motor. With stock lifters. I have a phantom rev limiter that is keeping the motor from revving past 6000, but from the way the motor is accellerating, it should go well past that point. Right now in first gear it will pitch you forward when it hits 6000, it is pulling that hard.
My old combo with a stock LT1 and a GM Hot Cam would rev freely to 7000, and was still gaining hp at 6200 on the chassis dyno when the guy let out.

Depending on the size of your motor, and heads, 6000-6200 should be easy under boost with a 350-355, on the stock cam.

Re: stockish sized turbo cam

And just to set the record straight, all this time I thought I was getting 12 psi, my digital boost gauge has been off. Best I can figure is I am only seeing around 6-7 psi, which matches what the waste gate actuators are supposed to open at.

So I will be adding a mechanical boost gauge, and getting a better read on things. Either way, it still revs easy past 6000, so that tells me the stock cam is fine for a mild 6-10 psi boost buildup. I'll know more once I get the tune dialed in, and crank up the boost to an actual 12-14 psi.

And it makes me feel much better about the 405 RWHP number on the stock motor. Seemed weak for 12 psi, but very adequate for 6-7.

TIme to start waggering on what she'll do on 12 psi!

I'm running a 218/218 114lsa cam, and the car makes peak hp at 5,600 and falls off pretty fast after 6,200.

Just curious, and for the sake of comparison, what are the specs on your motor? Cubic inch, heads, boost, and is the cam advanced or retarded.

On my old combo, I had the GM Hot Cam, straight up, with a 58 mm TB, 1.6 RR, a stock 96 LT1 long block and intake, and the twins at 6-7 psi. The peak hp was 405 @ 6200, and hadn't dropped yet. The dyno op just let out when the shift light came on. Oh, yeah.. stock bore 350.
I don't have any numbers on my new setup yet, but seat of the pants when it hits the mystery 6000 rpm limit it is still pulling very hard. This is with a stock LT1 cam, and ported LT4 heads and intake.
It would be interesting to see other peoples combos and numbers, so us beginners would have something to compare to.

My motor is 357ci, heads are AFR's with 215cc intake runner, 272cfm @.550 intake, 200cfm @.550 exhaust, 20psi boost, cam is on a 112icl.

Don't get me wrong, on the street I can still shift it at 6,500+ if I wanted to, but on the dyno you can see the power dropping at 6,200.

(when I had a 224/224 113lsa cam, it had about 100rwhp more at 6,500)

Yeah for the time being this is going to be a low compression stock motor. Seems like the 218/218 114 cam has the power range the stock is having for texlurch... any reason why that may be? Both have great heads and about the same displacement, maybe the turbos...?

Re: stockish sized turbo cam

Hard to say.. he did say his would accelerate past 6500, so that jives with what I get. And my dyno numbers were with the Hot Cam, so I am sure the stock cam probably will peak lower.
I know forced induction will raise the rpm versus n/a; you are increasing the airflow to the motor, just like a bigger cam or ported heads. And larger motors with the same size cam usually make peak power at lower rpm, since hp is based on torque time rpm.
Maybe mine is just a freak? 513 RWTQ at 3400 on a stock motor.. at 6 psi? But that is also a function of my 3400 rpm stall..

I also have true dual 3" exhaust with Supertrapps and no cats, so it flows a little better than the average 4th gen 3" single pipe.

Every combo varies, so you just have to take it all in and make a guedumicated decision!
