Which size turbo? Chevy Colorado I5

I am planning to purchase an '05 Colorado reg cab Sport.

I was wondering if there is a turbo that is used for another popular car/truck that has a turbo that would work well with the I5.

It is a 5 cylinder 3.5L DOHC 20 valve engine with variable valve timing(exhaust only I think)

What would be something that would be capable of producing another 100 hp at the wheels?

The engine is basically a chopped off trailblazer I-6. It has 10:1 compression just like the LS1, and those are running around with 12 psi when they are tuned right....

EDIT: Btw it would be an automatic and they start with 220 HP at the crank(wonder what they dyno at?)

Re: Which size turbo? Chevy Colorado I5

Would a stock Supra turbo work? Its from a 3.0L and is good for plenty of HP but would probably have lag. Or maybe GMC Syclone turbo? OR a GN turbo? Anything that I can get from the junkyard or cheaper than the top-of-the-line stuff like turbonetics and $2000 turbos and can add me about 100 hp to the wheels and not be too large of a turbo.(lag..)

I dont know squat about which turbo to pick. for instance .52 A/R doesnt mean much to me...I know(think) .52 is around 4cyl size and .76 or 88 is commonly used on larger engine for big HP like Supras and turbo LS1s...

Thats about all I know as far as "picking" a turbo...

I ask because if you guys say it wont work (for some ungodly reason) then I may reconsider and buy a 4x4 Colorado instead and just do what I can with it.

Even a cheaper one that brand new. I need to spend less than $1000 just for the turbo for sure. The other stuff is gonna add up for sure.

Thanks a BUNCH

BTW if you need any info let me know Im always checking my email all day and I have thread notification on this thread...or just PM me!

I have no idea.....lol all I know is the amount of power I'd like to make and the amount of lag I'd like(as little as possible)

I was thinking about calling turbonetics to see what they think since they are a pretty respectable name....

Go w/ something small like a stock GN turbo or a T3/T4.

What about a header flange? I'm sure the I-5 had exhaust ports on one side, so that'd be quite a manifold you'd have to make. I guess you could use a plasma cutter and hack the flange off an OEM manifold. Best of luck. I've been looking at a Colorado as a daily driver and I'd like to see how this turns out. I figured I'd just put the jug on it and be happy.

Yeah I was thinking about the T3/T4, which from what I hear will be big enough to allow me to run more boost later if I want to.

As far as the turbo manifold...I havent even seen under the hood of a Colorado yet...I was just about to walk out the door and go to the dealership when I saw this post.

That idea about cutting off the flanged from a stock manifold dont sound like too bad an idea. I know where I can get the flanges that fit the I5 but they are individual flanges...

0 0 0 0 0 like that

[0 0 0 0 0] not that

So its gonna be a b!tch but I think I can make it work.

The intercooler I looked at is about 27.5" x 3.5" x ?

Im going to take a tape measure with me to see if the intercooler will fit behind the front bumper....I'll let you know how it goes.....

Time for a test drive!

I think if you hack off the factory flange and use a box of bends, you can make a pretty simple setup. Now, getting the thing to run right, now that's another animal in itself.

Re: Which size turbo? Chevy Colorado I5

what about making an adapter flange that bolts to the manifold and the turbo?

Re: Which size turbo? Chevy Colorado I5

For something like this, I'd hate to say it, but call STS. With the added room you have under th back of the car, and that you only want 100hp, talking to them about a few things would probably be easier. Putting it in the rear will limit the power, but will cut costs dramatically.

Also, does anyone know how much power the driveline can take? You'd be buying a new car and destroying the warranty when you did this. I know the Colorados are nice, but would it be easier and cheaper to buy an S10 or 1500 that's a few years old? Depends on how much you want to tow. But IMHO it's just not the best idea ever to buy a brand new car and destroy the warranty. If that's what you really want, then you probably have cash to burn and thusly probably are looking to do something better then an STS kit.

For a cheap power adder, the Rear mount idea is a good one. Espicially for only 100hp more...
