Exclamation Serious buyer looking for good used S-Trim

Man these things are hard to find and I can't justfiy buying new since I already did that with my Powerdyne. I've given the P600B a thought since they come with intercooler and there always seems to be a few available ....but so many complain about excess noise and failing tensioners .....err, I don't know. Seems like everyone loves their S-Trim as long as they're not looking to top 600 RWHP. All I want is 500 or so .....so it would easily suit my needs with or without intercooler. Anyway ......I just know that's the blower I really want because of the build quality and spring loaded tensioner, and mild but not too wild whine. I guess I can settle for a P600B but I'll feel like I'm driving some teenager's car around making all of that noise constantly. (on some level I'd like it of course though ) ...open up the E-valve on the Borla and hear the cam thump and loud blower whine together, people would be like ....lol. Any suggestions for a reputable site other than E-bay? Should I just start looking there? (seems like a crapshoot from the few times I've tried)

Very serious ....especially if I can find a relatively complete kit from a well known board member like yourself for a good deal. I just hate to go through this whole rebuild with the minimal upside available from the Powerdyne. Realistically I can only get 450 RWHP with a really good cam and Lloyd Elliot heads because this thing will be limited to 5.5 PSI or so going through a mild heads/cam motor like I'm building. Belt slip is probably going to be an issue witih a faster reving motor too (6-rib ..that's it) ....requiring me to step up to a custom 8-rib setup for the PD. I know of one other member here that has made approx 500 rwhp with the PD (124 MPH 1/4) but he had to squeeeeeeze every last little bit out of his combo to make it happen (longer rods, Keith Black hyper pistons, lightweight rotating assembly, near perfectly matched cam to TFS heads ported by GTP, 58mm TB, 8-rib pulley setup, overpullied blower, etc.

500 is all I want too, but I'd rather get it easier/cheaper and with forged pistons (make less power than hypers but stronger as we all know), cheaper heads, standard rod length, and simply .....a better blower that will have an upside and intercooling option (an intercooler would choke the Powerdyne down to nearly nothing). I guess in the bitter end I can live with the PD and ~450 rwhp but what if I get bored? What if it craps out? (not as reliable as a Vortech and will be pullied to the max to make that 450). I may still use it but I'd rather not ...it would be great for someone looking to charge a stock motor but that's about it IMO.

Yes, I'm very serious if you have a mostly complete kit without a ton of miles for a good deal..........

I've been thinking of selling my S trim. It's in really good shape, but I don't really need it on a stock motor at the moment, plus I'd like to pay down my credit card after this last cam install fiasco. Send me an e-mail if you're interested and we can discuss it.

Thumbs up

Now we're talking! I checked out that link and it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for! Especially since you've done the Vortech elbow mod for the MAF, the custom oil line, the solid intake, etc. This sounds like what I really want ....sending you mail ....

That's a good deal. He's even got an opti cap and rotor in the pic.

I'm going to redo my timing gears so I can keep the charger so I went ahead and deleted my last post. But it will be for sale definately when my other setup is ready.

thanks for the info guys (btw, EDSZ28 I am still interested in your P600B until I hear a sound clip that tells me "nooo, that's just too loud" .....I have yet to hear/find one with my dial up connection ....like I said, that blower may not be too loud for my taste ...I really have no idea other than what people say).

There's a lot I don't know about ATI and Vortech, for example ....the e-bay seller says "it's the V1 version ...it is the loud blower". He also claims it can make 20 PSI ?!? .....really? How many different types of "S-Trims" are there? There's V1, SQ, what else? Has the SQ been out for a long time or is it a relatively late offering? Reason I ask is the only Vortech I've heard was an S-Trim of some local guy's but he didn't even know what he had ...he just said, "ehhh, it's just the regular Vortech" ...whatever that means. His was pretty quiet ...almost as quiet as my Powerdyne so maybe it was an SQ. Thing is, he bought it several years ago and it was used then ...so if the SQ is a newer offering it's not what I heard.

Dang, anyone have links to sound clips/videos of different blowers? 97WS6Charged, would you call your V1 a "loud" blower?

It's loud at idle (sounds real similar to belt squeel), but once the car is moving all you hear is a very slight whistle. The fuel pump is louder once you're moving. If you want quiet, get a V2 SQ, or a turbo.

I've heard just a few V1 S-trims, they are pretty much comparable to the procharger P600B. I've also heard the newer V2, it is much quieter than the V1 but you still know somethings under the hood. At idle, the P600B is pretty mean sounding. At cruising speeds, it's not as loud. At freeway speeds, you hardly know it's there.

The V1 and V2 each flow approx. 1000 cfm and can support 680 horse max (according to Vortech). I think it can support a little more with the aftercooler though, since the aftercooler increases the density of the incoming air. The P600B flows 1200 cfm and can support around 800 horse, very similar to Vortech's T-trim.

I think Vortech's blowers are more efficient. Maybe that's why ati doesn't supply compressor maps.

I don't think I've ever seen an SQ or "V2" for sale. The way you all are describing whine it sounds like the P600B is no worse than the V1 ?? If you don't hear it much once moving I don't think it would bother me much. My biggest concern was how much it would bother me when on trips/commutes. The longest trip/commute this car will see is about 60 miles and it's freeway. The rest is city driving on the weekends but the traffic's not bad here ....not a whole lot of stop and go. So maybe the whine from either blower wouldn't bother me I have enjoyed the stealth of the Powerdyne and only being able to hear the impellor (sounds like a very quiet turbo when cruising at low load ...cool IMO). If these blowers really sound like "belt squeel" at idle though ....geeze, I dunno ...

anyone have sound clips?

BTW, Ed ...you say the ATI is likely to be less efficient, yet flows more CFM? Seems like it would be more efficient due to moving air easier .....but there are other things like impellor shape that come into play I guess.

I'm a little confused about your reasoning though...I admit I don't know that much about superchargers, but a good cam with LE heads by itself should be pulling 400RWHP, how are you only getting 50RWHP from 5.5psi? I would think it would be more like 20hp/lb, so +110rwhp or ~500rwhp like your looking for..?

Did anyone notice in the pic of the ebay kit that there wasnt a vortech Damper? It looks like just a crank pulley for the S/C. Is this right? I bought my V1 used and it came with the pulley only. Anyone else havy any input? Everyone using their stock balancer/pulley + V1 pulley piggiebacked?

95 Z/28 with the V1 supercharger.

http://www3.telus.net/public/mackenzl/LWMsZ-28/Z28.MOV
it's a quick time movie.

It's about 7 megs, but the beginning of the clip will give you an idea. It sounds like a jet turbine at idle and just off idle, as it spins up, it makes much less noise, and by 2,000 rpm is not really noticeable.

On the other hand .... people stare and then roll their windows up at intersections , kids wonder aloud "what is the matter with car??" as you cruise through the local Wal-Mart ... yes, I do patronize Wal-Mart. And once, even a border guard asked if I may have a problem water pump in there??

Some don't like the noise, but I just love it.

Hope this helps
