????'s about procharger

i want to know if my engine can take a procharger, i plan to put one on with an aftercooler

i have 93 z28 6sp 109K onit

mods are- bbk shorties, 1.6rr, pulleys. hypertech chip and low temp thermostat, Cai, 3" catback, aluminum drive shaft, pro 5.0 shifter, msd blaster, 4:10 gears.

would i need like a bigger fuel pump . or larger fuel injectors or would it be fine the way it is, with like 5 -8 psi. should i switch back to 3:23 gears. , i just need some answers, what kinda mods do i need before a procharger? would i need to reprogram my car. or what? thanks

Prochargers use air/air intercoolers, As far as how long your motor is going to last is a pretty much up to you. It can last for 500 miles to 30,000 miles. its all in your tune but aleays be prepaired for the rebuild b/c it will come. Yes you will ned bigge injectors and bigger fuel pump.

Get rid of the underdrive pullies for sure. I'd also look into ditching the Hypercrap and getting a good tune in the car. Get a set of 42# injectors, an MSD 6BTM ignition/retard box and a good set of spark plugs, one range colder than stock. ATI provides a fuel pump that is OK, but there's better out there. You should be fine w/ the 4.10s too.

As far as how long the motor will last, that's hard to say at 100K+ miles. I'd only do it if you've got the money or are prepared to rebuild the motor. With 10.5:1 compression and the hypereucraptic pistons, one detonation will turn a piston into an ashtray. I'd also be worried about the clutch and rear end. Boost is addictive and expensive. Mine lasted just over 3 years with the parts I described above and a good (somewhat rich) tune in it.

So you guys are saying that with a procharger, the motor will blow? I have 47k mi. For what its worth. What exactly blows? Is it something that we can fix ourselves by replacing parts, or do we have to physically go in and take out the motor because the motor melted into one piece? Educate me please.

With any kind of foce induction you run the risk of blowing something weather it be the ring lands or pistons. BTW Prochargers isnt making anybodys car blowup.

Always be prepaired for the rebuild.

Normally, the first thing to go is the ring lands on the pistons. Even a rebuild with just forged pistons and rods will make a big difference. Of course, you have to take the entire motor apart for that.

I can tear apart the motor myself. I'm not worried about that. As far as the pushrods go, when I buy the supercharger, I was going to get chromoly pushrods. Is that the same as forged? And the pistons, how much do forged pistons cost? Will it be necessary right away? Can I wait until motor blows and then do the Pistons/ring lands, or will it be too late then? Thanks.

If you have the time and $$$, I'd do the pistons now(preventive maintenance). Might as well toss a cam in while your at it. I forgot about the pushrod problem on the LS1. I'm not positive about the LS1 valvetrain, but I went w/ the hardened pushrods with guideplates on my LT1.

I think Diamond makes a stock size forged piston for the LS1s.

So how much will some good pushrods, and pistons cost me? And you suggest I get a blower cam now, and I'll get some gains, then do the cam after SC, and get some BIG gains? Thanks for the advice.

Well, if you're gonna replace pistons, might as well throw in a cam while your at it.

I don't know how much the pistons/pushrods all cost. I'd contact Diamond and see how much their forged 346 slugs are. Pushrods can be had from Thunder Racing.
