Question Ngk Tr6....vs....ngk Tr6ix

Putting in new plugs. Running a Vortech V-1 Atrim @ 7psi. A lot of people recommend the TR6's (NGK TR6 (stock number 4177))...I'm just curious why no one mentions the NGK TR6IX (stock number 3689). Is there a reason no one runs the iridium plugs for boosted applications other than the price?

Thanks,

Pricey solution when Autolite 104's do a great job. I also don't like the screw on tips on the TR6s.

Re: Ngk Tr6....vs....ngk Tr6ix

I was running the AR-104's...autolite racing plugs, but neither the Shucks, Napa, or carquest in my town carries them. Only place I've found to get 'em on a regular basis was PartsAmerica.com, and it was just a hastle. I'm prolly gonna go with the regular TR6's, they're only 2.xx per plug...plenty cheap...and are available right down the road from me. I was just curious if there was something with the Iridium plugs that kept people from using them, other than the price...I'm gonna assume its just the price.

Thanks anyways,

Iridium will increase the life of the plug but I find I like to pull the plugs on a blower car now and then to view how well things are burning.

The benefit of iridium is that it takes a thinner coat to protect the plug from wear than a platinum plug. This thinner coat means that they're easy to light.

When I use the word coating, I'm referring to how much platimum or iridium is deposited on the electrode.

According to NGK, Iridium plugs have a greatly reduced firing voltage, lower than copper. This helps supply max voltage for igniting the mixture under extreme conditions such as boost and N20. Or you could use an igniton box which I would think would be more effective.

Platinum plugs should never be used with boost or N20 for a number of reasons.

Agree with Joe. I have talked to the NGK engineers and I specifically asked them about iridium in boosted apps and they said they like it for that. I have a meeting with them next Tuesday for work - they are also bringing me some of the racing plugs - , maybe I'll quiz them on it some more (and get them to send me some). If there's any good info from the meeting I'll let you know.
