Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Hey guys I dont have bug bucks but I found this deal on a Paxton supercharger for a third Gen F body I think it was a 91 Z28. It has a similar TB as my 93 I think so I bought it in hopes I can use it on my 93 LT1. He is including everything from his car except the CAI. What do you guys think I will have to do to get this to work. Will I need special brackets? This was a really good deal so if I spend some money I will still be ahead of the game. He took it off a working car, should I get it rebuilt or something to start with? It is a small boost maybe 4-7 PSI SC how much power should I be looking at with CAI SLP Jet hot coated shorty headers modded Y pipe magnaflow cat back exhaust 1.7 RR 52 MM TB TB bypass and a custom tune? When I ask about how much I mean after all of the mods are on the car and I bolt the blower on? My mustang buddy says about 40 HP is that right???
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
First off your mustang buddy is way off. Probally why he drives a mustang. Any way the braket that mounts the supercharger to the block is probally different. Then you have to find out if the rotation is correct and if the discharge is inthe coorect position. Try going on there website and see if the have a parts list. If they do then try comparing part nimbers. 40 horse gain would be extremely low. I didn't even know paxton made superchargers for camaros. I've never seen any so good luck.
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Paxton does make blowers for Camaros, just not for 4th gens. You will have to make the brackets yourself or have them made. Like mentioned above you need to make sure it spins the right way, cause if it doesn't you'd be completely wasting your time. 40 hp from even 5 PSI is rediculous, I've heard that the Paxton SN95 chargers are not very efficient, but I would be dissapointed if I got it on the car and didn't gain at least 100 HP with 5 or 6 PSI. Most near stock cars with a 6 PSI kit make around 375 to 400 RWHP. With all that said, you may find that the custom brackets and tensioner system will cost a lot to make and will probably be a pain in the *** and may never work correctly. This is just a suggestion, so take it for what it's worth, but if you can get it cheap enough you could sell it for a profit to someone who has a car that it would fit on more easily and use that money to buy a Vortech or ATI kit that is made for your car. I've seen plenty of them on here for sale in the 1500 to 2000.00 dollar range.
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Thats what I was afraid of I couldnt help myself as he was asking 400 bucks and he took it off the car working I figured it was a great deal. I am hoping I can do something with it maybe have my buddy at the machine shop make me a bracket. Is there anything in particular I should be extra cautios of? How do I tell if it is turning the right way? Maybe I can put it on here and try and trade for the correct model in something else. I wonder if I can get a bracket from another SC and make it fit mine then it would be easier I think.
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Is it a complete kit or just the head unit? For 400 bucks you should defenitly be able to make a profit. I bought my sc for 1600 of this sit so you can get them for a good price for you car specific.
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
400 for the complete kit minus the CAI that he needed to keep on the car thats why I am trying to get it to fit mine it seemed like such a killer deal and I thought the 3rd and 4th gen camaros had similar TB
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
The throttle bodies are the same, the differences are in the accessory brackets. It think it will spin the right way, if I recall correctly, they are mounted the same direction on the 3rd gens as they are on the 4th gens. The Corvettes are the ones that have the reverse rotation. Your main problems are going to be getting the crank pulley and supercharger pulley to line up, and positioning the tensioner pulley correctly so that it applies the proper amount of tension to the belt. I would start looking at possibly modifying the brackets it has to work for your application. It probably wouldn't hurt to place a call to the Paxton tech line and ask them a few questions either.
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Here is some new info on the supercharger and more questions. I went to look at it and it is a SN 92 7880 I could just barely turn the thing by hand, shouldnt it turn fairly easy I can imagine it is supposed to be stuck that way? I removed the cover and coukd see no physical damage. What would it cost to get it rebulit by Paxton any ideas? Next there is no mounting hardware that will work with my LT I would have to fab everything or buy a mounting kit and this thing is pretty big has anyone seen one of these mounted on a Camaro? I assume they mount on the left side near the bottom like the Corvette models? What is this thing worth and how much am I gonna spend on mounting hardware FMU Intake and setup for TB Fuel pressure reg etc?
Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
I think you're going to get in over your head pretty quick on this. I would not even attempt that install and I built my own turbo kit.
The blower should spin freely (unless there's something different to do with the ball drive ystem). Paxton is owned by Vortech now and I'm not even sure if they will rebuild it for you. If they will, you're probably looking at $1000.
If I were you, I'd tell him the head unit is damaged and get your money back. If you determine the head unit is not damaged, then sell it to a 3rd gen owner for $1000.

Re: Newbie to supercharging needs some pointers
Paradise Wheels rebuilds this unit for about $600-700. These guys are making it sound like no one has ever put a Paxton on an LT1 car....Shouldn't really be that difficult. infact if you search under the forsale category for Paxton it pulls up a bunch of LT1 kits. It mounts underneath as the 3rd gen mounts on top. The braketry should all be available as should the tubing. I would contact Craig at Paradisewheels.com and he should be able to help you out with this and all the other questions you have.
And if you do find the correct piping for your appl. I would be willing to buy the piping you have for the 3rd gen. (Blower to intake) I'm experimenting with my setup and hate to buy brand new ones and experiment with those.
Let me know if any of this helps.
