Need advice: go from S-trim to YSI or to turbo?
Need advice: go from S-trim to YSI or to turbo?
The engine is fully forged 396, 8.75 CR, methanol injection, big cam, dual Walbros, big injectors, hardened 6speed, solid rear end, etc. Supposedly it dynoed at 600 rwhp by the previous owner which is about what it should be, but I expect it's closer to 500. Either way I'm tired of seeing the boost at 5psi at 4000 RPMs and being able to only squeak street tires in second gear. It's not fast enough. It doesn't scare me at all. Sometimes it's pretty disappointing even.
I want about 130mph 1/4 speed, or about 700 rwhp. And it's mostly a street car, so I would rather not have to wait until 4 grand to hit 350 horsepower. I want 400 ft-lbs at 3000 rpms. Although I don't want to do a ton more work on a car I've already done nothing but work on, I'm thinking about tearing out the supercharger and putting in a T88 turbo setup. It will have to be a turbo or a YSI. Thoughts please?

If you go with a YSi, get a good set of mounting brackets. The stock ones are just way too weak for that blower. Also start saving up for a cog drive setup, that will really bring the YSi to life.
Hmmm Not an expert here but you say you want peak power @ 3000 RPM a Turbo is probably not the answer...
I would stick with the Supercharger plan, and go with an upgrade there
I'd also focus on getting it tuned properly, if it's not already
I've seen a few charged cars running around CT in 650 - 800 HP range (one supposedly on STOCK Heads
, but VERY WELL Tuned)
My feeling is the YSI is overkill for what you are talking, it's more about the right setup than just throwing a high power charger system on the car. Based on what I've seen you can make the power you want buy putting together the right components and proper tuning over just a large charger
Vortech also has an upgrade policy, so you may talk with them, and really work through the right setup

If you need advice on turbo sizing or looking for a setup, let me know.
BTW, PT88 is overkill for 700rwhp. a Nice T76 will do that for you and spool quicker.
The turbos spooled super fast (the most recent one actually spooled as fast as the t70 but was much bigger), so if you do not haev the suspension to handle 20PSI all at once, the blower is the way to go.
both of my setups ran super hot. Of course, I am sure it was due to having pusher fans, and a turbo between the waterpump and the radiator. However, with the most recent turbo, its the only way I could have done it.

You bring up a good point about the rapid onset of boost with a turbo. One of the things I like about the supercharger is the gradual increase of boost as RPM's increase to control wheelspin. Lack of traction has been a problem with my car too. I recently sold my 58mm throttle body and put my old stock 48mm back on. Why? It helped me to control wheelspin and launch better. I'm also gonna go to some 15" rims so I will have more sidewall/traction. A fast car is definitely not all about raw horsepower. Its the whole package.

Go turbo, I did and ****in love it! Its amazing. I have a built 383 lt1 but higher compression (9.87). I see about 5psi at 3800 rpm ( I have a big t6 flanged turbo).
The pull from a turbo is amazing, the car pulls like it did last year NA but once it spools up and the tires break loose its amazing.
I spin all the way thru 2nd and sometime third gear (th400), this is on 7psi and a **** tune.

No brainer, Turbo.... Less stress to the motor, super boost curve, no belts, and unlimited power... When I did my project there were no real turbo kits, now there are a few.... If you want big tq at low rpm maybe consider a roots style blower, I don't like em, but they hit hard immediately...

I'm working on it. I was off on my 60ft's and a 10.0:1 A/F that night also. Was running in the mid 1.70's but can usually cut them in the mid 1.50's. Think my ET Streets were just giving up that night. Have a set of Hoosier Drag slicks for it now, but haven't been back out yet. Think i could have run 10.40's that night with a 60ft alone. Converting over to a ported Victor EFI setup now and also gonna step down a pulley size. Hopefully get me 15psi. Then off to the track with the slicks. I think i can pull a 9 out of it. Not too bad for a 3700lb race weight.
