Intercoolers: Air-to-air vs. Water-to-air

What are the differences and benefits of each. I tried a search but nothing really came up. Just looking to gain knowledge on turbos. Thanks.

Here is an ok thread- http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&threadid=6678

Beleif before was that air/air was best for street and air/water is best for track. But many will argue the oposite. So really its just your prefereance on what to run as both have good and bad points.

Air/Air is nice as you install it, and your done. You dont have to think or do anything with it again. And you will get consitant gains with it.

Air/Water can be more to think about or deal with as you have to make sure there is enough liquid in it, and ice if you use that too. But it can provide better cooling than an air/air if you use ice especially.

There are more + and - ...

How much water/anitfreeze is typically in an air/water? The weight aspect may also be a factor and being on the front of the car. Don't know how much that would cancel out the cooler temp effect. How hard is it to add ice/water/antifreeze? Seems like it could possibly be a PITA if it is hidden by that front headlight like I see around. At the same time, that is a nice spot for one.

i am running an air/water setup. I'm testing out a new cooler for a company so i got a good deal and it ended up being roughly the same for a air/air setup. Usually, an air/air is cheaper overall.

i have a 4 gallon water cell that i put in my spare tire well and i the intercooler in the opposite front corner to help with weight distribution. You figure a full 4 gallons in the cell, plus maybe another gallon in the lines and you have 5 gallons total. Add the weight of the cooler (this is where you save weight over an air/air) about 10lbs.

Hope that helps, i dont remember the weight of a gallon of water...you can look it up though

1 gal water = ~8.33 pounds.

IMO, air to air sucks. Air to water has the capability to make so much more power. I have mine mounted where the back seats used to be, the tank is in the rear of the car. It is heavy, that intercooler DRY weighs around 40#'s. Add some ice water to that.....no antifreeze as someone said.....and it weighs around 50#'s easy.

Here is a pic of it: It's old and doesn't give you a good idea of how large it is. It will support 2500hp

Scott what are you planning to run with the car? see you said your gonna use a 96 will you be running pro5.0? (think its a 96 mm limit in that class at least)

Looks like a nice build up.

As for my .02 on the intercooler question though at hand..

Benefits of air-water..
place the intercooler anywhere do not have to worry if you are going to have air flow in that area either. I placed mine *HERE* when I was going to be running twins. Now will be changing things around so I can work my single turbo.

Benefits of air-air like said.. Its a plug and play setup once you place it you can forget about it pretty much just have to make sure nothing gets stuck on it or you will loose your cooling capabilities. The one thing that i always think about with air-air's is that you are going to have a bear of a time to get a decent sized one in the nose of our cars. It just does not lend itself to that unless you don't mind doing a lil cutting of the nose.

What are you planning? What is your majority of use going to be? Might sway my choice personally on which one to choose.

My sig is actually outdated, by about 2 years I haven't had the 95TA for ever! I started out wanting to build something with a 96, but ended up with a 106. It's an Outlaw car, just run some true 10.5" tire stuff. It's a stock suspension deal.
