Intercooler on a Trans Am?

On a LT1 Trans Am where can a intercooler be mounted for the most efficent % of direct air flow? The only place I can see is mounting it up against the radiator and using the radiator air flow for IC cooling. The Camaro guys have better luck since the front bumper has a good size opening where an intercooler could be using, but not the T/A guys. The only front bumper opening is the for the fog lights and I doubt with those removed it would ever make a difference. So, you T/A guys running an intercooler, where did you mount it? I'm not too keen on the 2 small ICs that Procharger uses in their kits either. In time I plan on running a serious FI setup and would like to consider what I have for options now.

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

What ive been looking into seems like the ATI twin intercoolers work. But the other option Ive seen is you cut out where you Lic plate would be and use that. Someone sells a bracket that is louvered. Only options Ive found. Im looking into these same options as well. Probably going to go with the ATI D1sc set-up with the twin intercoolers instead of hacking everything up.

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

The LS1 guys use the OBX TBX-3000 unit but I am not sure if it would fit in an LT1. Only way to be sure is to pull your front bumper cover off and measure.

Most of the guys doing this are ditching the crappy ATI twin-coolers and seeing awesome results..

You can do a search on LS1Tech.com in the FI seciton. Tons of writeups about it.

I wouldn't think there would be any structural differences?

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

I ran a 3-core ATI in the nose of my '95 for 2 years and had no problems. I now have my Sperco mounted in the same location.

Try a search...it does work wonders.

I had to lose the reinforcement bar and switched to an aftermarket fan/radiator set up but the finished system is Killer.

Good Luck

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

I would like to know the answer to this question also. I have done searches and not turned up anything. Maybe I am not putting in the right words.

Mongse 1, do you have any pictures showing how you did this? Did you just mount it directly in front of the radiator? Did you cut an opening in the front where the front license plate goes or did you get enough air flow from the air dam under the car to cool both the intercooler and the radiator?

Thanks.

This is on a LS1 car..... but like i said before i don't believe there would be any structural differences under the nose.

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

My old setup (P600B Procharger w/ 3-core) had the intercooler mounted directly to the end of the frame. You have to remove the crash bar and the styrofoam to do this. The fitment is almost perfect. I don't have any pics of that setup, but I do have some of the new setup (twin turbos w/ Spearco A/A intercooler). The Spearco is the same size as the 3-core, only much thicker.

As for the bumper situation, on the first setup, I removed the fog lights and used that as my air source. It did help a little, but more than anything else, it kept the intercooler away from the road (unlike ATI's k-member "idea"). For the Spearco, I did a little modifying...

It mounts the same way (bolted to the end of the frame) and provides enuff clearance to mount a Moroso catch can, B&M tranny cooler and the new AFCO radiator perfectly vertical.

Re: Intercooler on a Trans Am?

I dunno if Im that willing to modify my front end. Plenty of cooling though with that set-up. Lot of flex in the nose now?

Nope. I have aluminum ribs grafted to the inside of the nose now. Without those, there would be a lot of flex since the center piece provides a LOT of support.

With a stock motor (heads never came off the car), transmission/converter, etc, I went 12.3x @ 118mph. This was w/ 8# of boost and a relatively stock weight car on a tire & some simple suspension mods. It ran OK I suppose. New setup will be a tad faster.
