Ignition for high boost
Re: Ignition for high boost
i installed the delteq/MSD DIS4 in the engine bay toward the end of this week.
I mounted the set of cadillac coils to the firewall on the driver's side behind the engine as far up as I could. it's completely out of the way and i don't have to deal with running the passenger side plug wires around the accessory bracket.

Re: Ignition for high boost
definitely isn't going to get in the way of pulling the valve covers... I'm getting ready to head out for the night, but I'll snap pics tomorrow and post 'em. it's pretty slick.
Re: Ignition for high boost
I am having a very similar problem. MSD Digital 6, HVC-II coil, my rotor looked worse than that.. I am running DFI Gen 7 .. I was getting arc-over that would cause the car to fire when it wasn';t supposed to. In a batch fire system, that can be a huge problem.
I just replaced my opti/rotor with summit's as MSD's is on back order and I promised my son a ride in my car for his birthday next a week from monday. Let me know how you make out.
Good luck!

Fwiw, I use a stock opti (with riveted rotor contact), stock coil, MSD Digital 6, BS3 engine management, and all is well at 24psi.
IMO your ignition should be well up to task.
What does your valvetrain consist of? Have you tested a spring lately?

Re: Ignition for high boost
actually, I was wrong... I can pick the valve cover up, but not high enough to pull it over the exhaust rocker on #7...
I don't think I can move it over a half inch to give it plenty of clearance either.
(Or if I wasn't using the DIS-4 Plus, it would probably fit too -- the coils are about 1.25" taller because of the MSD interface risers or whatever you call those things).
As far as a place where the coils won't get in the way, mine came with a bracket that mounts to the bottom of the passenger side fan... Since that fan sits up higher, the bottom of the coils would be as high as the bottom of the driver's side fan...
I'm going to try to give myself enough clearance to pull the driver's side valve cover off... If I get it to work, I'll snap some pics... If I can't do it, I'll try to mock it up down in front on the fan bracket in the middle of a mess of intercooler tubing.

TekPro, you mentioned convenience. While pulling the water pump for a cap 'n' rotor swap sucks, I'm wondering if there is a place to put 8 coils that won't result in them being in the way.

Re: Ignition for high boost
I have the delteq with no rev limiter and I need one, funny ha. LJ has an unwanted rev limiter. LJ can I borrow yours?
Anyway, this post caught my interest due to the rev limiter problem with the delteq, there is none, just the stock pcm one which cuts fuel?
Anyway, just glancing at the MSD DIS 4 units at Summit, they have a HO version, part #62153 which is made specifically for high boost/nitrous use. LJ you should check this out if you decide to go with the delteq. Also, I have a cadillac coil pack for you if you are interested.
BTW, I am extemely happy with the delteq ignition system. IT has worked perfectly, not 1 misfire yet and it revs to no tomorrow. I got the radiator mounted one, keeps the coils cool. I installed a new opti too at the same time while I was doing some other work on my motor.
The number one problem all these years with my gasoline engines is the ignition, no doubt about it.

Re: Ignition for high boost
I am also VERY happy with the Delteq. It made a HUGE difference. I ended up mounting it where the stock airbox was. Very easy to get to that way. I'm still getting some misfiring at WOT but I think the spark plugs are to blame. I've been told I need to run a colder plug. What are you guys running that's better than the NGK TR6?

Anything else required to go to MSD DIS 4 route? Just curious as to who has done it and what all is involved. Thanks.
Re: Ignition for high boost
Don't get the DIS-4 HO if you plan to daily drive it... If you read the forums, they are meant for drag race only and people keep burning up the boxes when they use them for daily drivers. Get PN 65152.
The DIS-4 gives you rev limiter, 2-step, and a one-wire ignition cut-off (works perfect with a fuel pressure safety switch).
For a nice clean installation, I used part #8870: http://www.msdignition.com/install_access_dis_1.htm
Those mount between the coils and the delteq mounting bracket to give you connections to and from the coils. They come with the correct size longer bolts for coil mounting.
Here's a pic of the components:

The pictures on MSD's site are not correct. Even though the picture above matches MSD"s picture for PN 65153, mine is PN 65152 (non-HO version)

Thanks Roadie. You think you could post some pics of your install when it's done? I'd just like to see how you mounted the coil rack way in the back of the firewall. Pretty sure it won't be the best picture but I'd still like to see. Thanks again.
