Idle questions on new 383 and more boost, cam surge or misfire?
Idle questions on new 383 and more boost, cam surge or misfire?
First off I had a new 383 built with a 224-236-573/576-115lsa cam and a P600B pullied for 12#. I have a LTCC setup with magnacore wires and tr6 plugs. I also blow through the maf. I had a mail order tune done to get my car to the dyno. My question is what is the difference between cam surge and a slight misfire? The idle goes from 800-900, spark advance is from 26-29*and once in a while sounds like it is going to stall(once in every five minutes).I never had this cam in before but it sounds good. The motor doesn't really shake at idle but sounds choppy. I am not sure if it is what I mentioned or just my new cam. I used my scanmaster and datamaster and it seems fairly good, nothing really stands out. My bl's are around 130-136. My iac is in the 80's and my volts are .62-.66. I treid opening the blades but it hasn't affected it much. Do I keep going or is that good enough.I haven't driven it yet as it is still on jack stands. It smell rich but doesn't really read that way. The oil smells good and my plugs are alittle black but i think that is from reving it up with no load on the motor.Just wanted to see and hear from you guys what is the norm for this similar setup. If you guys can give me any info or direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks......John.

Whats the air/fuel ratio at idle? That cam in a 383 is not big enough for it not to idle. If the motor never dies at idle then I don't see the problem

I don't have a wide band hooked up yet but the historgram on datamaster looks to be o.k. I am going to install my racetronix pump and harness, take it off the stands and drive it. Thanks for the reply, anyone else?

Well at this point you're better off than me. My 383 w/s-trim 12# and 234/242 .576 114 won't idle period and is fouling out plugs. If you're worried about it trailor it out to the dyno and have them tune it there. That's what im doing since mine can't idle for a **** right now. Just curious what kind of power are you hoping for?

I'm shooting for around the same. Somewhere between 550-600 at the wheels. The Heads are TF LE ported with ferrea 2.08/1.6 valves, 918 springs and tit retainers. With the heads I've got a LE ported intake and a A & M Monoblade Throttle body. I think thats a good reason as too why it needs a lot of tuning to get it to idle. I already fouled a set of plugs so the car is sitting now until I can get Doug Rippie to tune it. Sounds mean footing it at 1000 rpm though
. Good luck with yours too. Keep me posted on what your numbers turn out to be.Mikey
