How often does the vortech BOV?

i have heard acouple guys say the vortech bypass valve is kinda crappy. it leaks overtime. now how often do these units actually not function right? is it luck of the draw or what?

Should be fine with 10# of boost or less. My original piece lasted 30K miles. It developed a leak (I'm running 10# of boost so I'm at it's limit) so I replaced it about 5K miles ago.

I'm running the same Bosch By-pass valve. I looked at stepping up to the Vortech Mondo by-pass valve and it's hugh and will be a problem to fit right.

how did you know it was leaking?

and do you know how much more boost it can handle? i dont think ill ever run more than 10-12psi.

Re: How often does the vortech BOV?

I know some guys on here are running eagle talon and such cars- there BOV and they work alot better. i was pretty sure they were running the 2g BOV from the 94 and up cars. but i talked to a guy and he said the 1g BOV is alot better- it can handle more boost-its metal and not plastic and it also makes noise- unlike the vortech and the 2g style on the 95 and new four banger turbos. but i could have sworn that one of the guys from this board said to use the 2g for some reason...

I was talking with a couple of guys that drive Evos...they said there are several direct replacment diverter valves on the market for the Bosch unit; Baileys and Force. They're smaller units similar in size to the Bosch and have the same inlet and outlet size. The Bailey unit is good for 60 psi!

bypass and bov are 2 different things. from reading, i learned bypass recirculates air back into the system, and blowoff releases to the atmosphere. one is better than the other, depending on boost level, i think.

Re: How often does the vortech BOV?

I bought my vortech kit used with about 30k miles. Original bypass works fine - I run 14psi.

BTW - bypass can also vent to the atmosphere.

It's a 1g blowoff valve. On a DSM it will hold 18 psi all day long and if you do something called "crushing" it will hold about 21 psi rock steady. All you need a flange on the intercooler piping and you can pick one up for cheap off of dsmtrader.com

I have a 90 Eclipse Gsx and a 91 Talon Tsi. Fun little cars.

the valve we are talking about that comes with the kit does both doesnt it? it bypasses when you are cruising, recirculating the unused pressure back through.

then closes when the throttle plates open up and our motor is using all the air pressure. then when you suddenly let off and the plates close, the valve really opens to relieve (blows off) the sudden pressure increase to prevent damage to the SC. impellar to housing contact could occur if the pressure isnt released somehow.

one reason why the air is recirculated is due to the maf sensor.

vortech's site calls them bypass/blowoff valves on their site.
