How much to supercharge LT1?
How much to supercharge LT1?
I always over looked s/c as an unreachable alternative. THe more I think about it, the better it looks. IS it possible to get a s/c kit (used one) for around 2k? That is my budget. Also I have heard stories of people blowing their LT1's. What is the safest amount of boost you can run and what hp figures on a stock motor are you looking at? What would 6psi give me? What is the cheapest s/c kit for LT1?
Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
I bought a used Vortech for $1250 that I turned around and sold to Darkhorse for the same amount (a friend helping a friend).
I bet he has in the range of $3K-$4K in mods and he ran 11.3X@121 on pump @ 5-6 lbs of boost...stock motor minus the small cam, rr's, tb, ewp & headers.

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
I need my motor to last a while, and I hear a lot about blowby on LT1's after blower. Is it possible to run like 3,4,5? Psi? Or is 6 the minimum?
Whats the install time on one of these?

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
If you run an air-air intercooler, such as what the ProCharger kits have, you should be able to run up to 8 lbs boost
pretty safely. I did. 2k should be enough to buy a complete used kit by Vortech or ProCharger. And yes, you can always "pulley down" in boost if you want.

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
Last Question(s):
W/ the basic kit, say your running 6psi. Do You need to upgrade your stock fuel injectors or fuel pump? Does the kit have everything you need, upgrade wise?
Is it bad to put a s/c on a stock motor?
Is there special tuneing required after putting hte s/c on and how much would you put down approx. w 6psi on a stock motor?
Thanks for hte help all.

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
All IMO, you would be more satisfied saving a little more money and making the appropriate changes to enable your motor to withstand an amount of boost that would give you enough power to make a marginal difference. At the same time, you can run a small blower application to your car (would at least reccomend a bigger fuel pump and injectors) as it sits with the stock motor, without damaging anything. This should also require at bare minimum your computer to be sent to a programer such as Ed Wright, or Bryan Herder. The catch is that to run a blower on a stock LT1 without damaging anything, you won't be able to run much boost (safely I would say 6 or less pounds of boost, and that would be best off being intercooled as well), and that won't really do too much. For the bare price that will cost, you might as well look into a good heads and cam package for less that will give you more power. I worked for a guy a few years ago that ran an intercooled Procharger with all the fuel upgrades with only 9 pounds of boost on his stock LS1. Within 2500 miles of driving it, he had fried a piston. You can always gamble by running 6+ pounds of boost on your stock motor, and who knows, you may be alright for a while, but there is a definate chance that if you do, you will be looking at an engine rebuild. Again, all IMO.

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
As sparkz28ss said, I was referring to your stock bottom end. Bolt ons and rocker arms won't do squat when it comes to supporting the strength of your motor. To do everything perfect as blown383 mentioned, yes it can get pricey. (I am about a week away from having my Z back from the motor shop with a new D1SC on it as we speak, so I have first hand experience in paying for it). With that said, just to do a 355 with some low compression forged pistons, and not get top of the line parts, and stick with your stock heads for now, if you know how to do the work yourself, or have someone who can help you out on the price that has a shop, you could do it for fairly cheap. Just my two cents though. You can always spend a couple thousand on a used blower, and a few extra $ on some fuel upgrades with a PCM tune, just to have a blower car if that is what you want. All I am saying is that for the money it will cost you, and the fact you don't want to rebuild your motor soon, so you will run low boost, you really won't have the same gain as if you were to spend less in a nice set of ported heads and a beefy cam. Again, just my opinion.
Blower cars usually seem unatainable just because of the price to have everything needed to go with them. I will have just spent under 10k for my car when I go pick it up at the motor shop. And it already had a lot of the good engine parts in before I dropped it off!

Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
All said and done if you can get the SC for what you say + fuel pump, PCM tune, and injectors, not including labor you could do it for less than 3k total. Maybe more if you get an intercooler as well (recommended for your stock bottom end).
Re: How much to supercharge LT1?
I got my Vortech for $1500 used.
You can run whatever boost you want to on your car, just need to figure out the right combo of crank and blower pulleys. Vortech claims something like 130ish hp on a stock engine.
I think nitrous is much more fun, but the supercharger pulls hard to redline, never needs refilled, and sounds cool as hell.
