How loud are the various chargers Decibel?

I've read many posts about how loud different chargers are, but none seem to have any decibel reading, this is better than the-I can hear it pretty well when driving answer-

Obviously whine is very cool with chargers, but if it sounds anything as loud as gear whine in the rear, then quiet is what I want?

When you guys say the charger is loud I assume you also mean it has a slight whine at idle and cruise, but when you give it full throttle it really makes the noise, is this an accurate assumption

The F-4 Prochargers are really loud. Pretty much any blower with a cog setup is also going to be loud. There are too many variables in what you are asking for a proper answer. It depends on how hard the blower is working, how it's mounted and how it's driven.

it a lot louder at idle than at any other rpm. at cruise you only hear a slight whine nowhere near enough to **** you off. I like the sound of the supercharger winding up though, it's sounds cool. As I approach boost on the gauge it makes this wooshing air sound.

I have the P1SC procharger.
ATI told me its appx 6 decibels quieter than the P600B supercharger they carry. But since they never gave me the rating of the P600B or the P1SC, I cant tell you the actual difference in the numbers.

I can tell you that many guys that had the p600B that heard my blower say they cant believe how much quieter it is. Dont get me wrong, you can still hear my P1SC blower but its not as loud as a P600B.

The most quiet blower on the market for our cars has to be powerdyne...My friend Maldo, has it on his car and you can barely hear it (only if you are really listening for it) but the powerdyne unit usually limits you to around 6psi of boost (unless you get expensive after market pullies and even then you are maxing out the blower and will probably be out of the efficiency range of the blower).

Hope that helps somewhat.

Thanks so far guys, well the 6 db difference doesn't sound like much, but it really is, and since your buddy couldn't believe the difference in sound, it must leave quit an impression. I called them up and they couldn't tell me any db numbers.
I even called powerdyne about their kit, and they couldn't say either. I really like the powerdyne but hate that fact of 6 psi max. I asked them about using their gear drive with our ca, and he said-not going to happen, are setups are made for the street and thats a race unit, and there is not enough call for it, and if someone really wants it they can throw it on in replacement of their other unit. I said there was a bigger demand than what he believes, and that the company gets a very bad rap because of limiting to that one charger unit. He reiterated that it was because they want a true street system and not race system with the cogs. I'm still undecided but I am very sold on the P1SC charger-its got lots of advantages, I just hope they have worked out the bugs of oil leaking from the seals, I keep hearing about. 95 Silver TA Have you had any problems with your unit, and how long ago did you purchase it?

I bought my P1SC about 3 years ago and it leaked after a few weeks of use. I had about 25K miles on it with 4.5 pound pullies when I had the stock motor and now a pulley combo that produces 10psi of boost with my current 383 set up and has been doing so for 10K miles. It still leaks but never caused any problems. Actually, some "tech" guy at ATI told me that some leakage is actually good because it lubricates the seals of the blower. I am not sure about what portion of leaks is good or what is bad but I do know mine has leaked for a long time and after 35K miles on the P1SC blower, eventhough it leaks, it still works well and I am happy with it.

Hope that helps,
Claude

I have a p-600 on my car and its pretty loud. I only have the 9psi pulley on it right now but when i get the 12# pulley on it im sure its going to get louder b/c its spinning faster. Mine is really only loud around 1-1500rpms anything higher you really cant hear it.

Unfortunately there is no hard written information on the noise levels.

My personal experience with the ATI units is as follows from quiet to loud:

P1SC
D1SC
P600B
D1
D1R

All the F-series units I have dealt with were on very loud vehicles so an accurate noise level of the charger could not be determined.

This can vary with pulley selection......

I have actually seen some P1SC blowers get quieter by adding a smaller pulley to increase the boost. Most others get louder when pulleyed for more boost. There are also variations between 2 identical units so your unit may be louder or quieter than someone elses.

On the average the self contained units make the most noise at idle & are hardly noticible on the highway. These are still quieter than the oil fed units almost in every case.

Hope this helps.

Here is a little video I made a while ago regarding this issue. The exhaust in this setup is 3" true duals with bullet mufflers and AS&M headers. It was not quiet by any means, and the blower drowns out its sound pretty well.

that blower is very loud.

there are a few silent models out there - my powerdyne for instance makes no discrenable noise at all

WHAT I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!

I don't think the D1SC is really that loud compared to the car that its bolted to. With a 4" exhaust, open BOV, and not to much sound insulation I can't honestly really hear the blower that much. It would be nice to have a chart on how loud all of the blowers are. I know my buddies Vortec S trim on his Mustang is louder than what mine is.
