in the detroit area where i am from i know a few people who race everynight for cash, many sell drugs, or have rich parents who buy them their toys. i myself had to save for over 2 and a half years to get my combo done, to bad it blew after 10 passes.

Or some of us have jobs and work for a living, but are good at managing our money.

Not everyone with something nice is a criminal or a mama's boy.

Hidden savings :-) .. I am married, 2 kids, mortgage, etc, typical middle-income family type bills.. I take some of my money every week and put it away adn the wife doesn't notice, therefore it doesn't get spent.. Now, when the kids need something, or something needs to be done on the house, well, that money suddenly appears and I have to resave for the car.. The car is not a priority, but, it gets taken care of.. Takes time and tenacity

Spending $$$ on cars when you can barely afford to pay the rent, or insurance, or car payments is not the smart thing to do. I know, this hobby is an obscession to most of us and we just have to do it regardless, right? Been there, done that! Looking back to my younger days when I was this way, I can only say that if I wouldn't have goofed off (in school) and wouldn't have spent all my $$$ on cars and women, I'd be far better off today.

Here's my advice. It's called prioritizing:

1) First and foremost, get that college degree. This opens up doors to jobs that aren't open to non-college grads.

2) Get a good job with your degree.

3) Go for advanced degrees, especially if your employer pays your way!

4) Buy real estate (house). This can only appreciate.

5) Get married. Oops, this is spending, not saving!!

6) Make babies. Oops again!

Although I didn't quite do it in this order, I did accomplish all the above. Today, let's just say I can afford whatever "toys" I desire.

Yes by the time you're done $5000.00 is a realistic figure especially if you have someone install it for you.

My install took 38 hrs because it's a vert and an abs box among other things had to be relocated to make room, plus redoing the fuel lines and the extra FMU etc. etc.

Maybe you should consider nitrous.
For a lot less money (400-700.00) you can make similar power.
The only downsides are refilling the space taking up tank and strictly speaking nitrous is only legal for offroad use,
whereas a blower is totally street legal.

Horrible, crippling debt.

Well, not really. Check the boards and eBay for used setups, they can be had for half the price or less in some cases.

I could use some workers.
How many you got in the late teens, preferably with a strong back and a weak mind?

Look at the age of the (majority of the) members here, and then take into account their priorities. Are they younger and single, older with dependants (maybe wife too) gone, or are they (30s/40s something) married with dependants in school/at home?

I see local bass fishermen dropping $25k on a new bass boat ever few years. If they can afford that, then I can put $5k/year in my car.

Re: How do you afford these mods?

After you spent $5000 for the blower kit. It gonna cost a lot more in a couple of year. Other people have say many times here. It is like a drug, it is so addicted. How so? cause I am one of them.
I start out with only bolt on stuffs, within a year I went and do a head/cam combo. It good for only one year. Year after went out and have 383ci storker and blower. Now I want Turbo setup. Damn it getting real expensive. I have spent over $20k in mods and still not happpy with my combo. Between cars and mortgage are the biggest bill to pay.

Re: How do you afford these mods?

high performance has almost broken me.i found myself dressing like a bum and living in a crap hole, but my ride looked good and hauled ***.the one thing that changed it for me is my 1 year old little boy.now i practice homemade everything.i build my own custom turbo set ups,do my own exaust, tuning, suspension, painting.the reason i replied is because you asked about a super charger.well those are great and are proably the best performance mod ever, but they are simply to expensive.so i reccomend a homemade turbo set up.if you want to know more about it i can tell you how to build your own(reliable)turbo kit for around 600.00 and expect atleast a 100 horse gain with this mod.email me at mjhomer539@msn.com and i will give you all the info you need to run 5-10 psi of boost safely and reliably.let me know if your intersted.
